HORRIBLE AWAKENING
! JERVIS WEARS opened his eyea.
He might as well have kept them
(hut, because he could see nothing.
An even blackness with no shading
In It confronted him. He dropped
tils lids and slipped back Into a
vague halt consciousness.
I Presently he moved, threw out
n arm, and groaned. The sound ot
this groan was the first to reach his
ears since he had heard Rosamund
more beside him In the dark Just
before he leaned forward to put on
the lights of her car.
He heard his own groan, and
opened bis eyes again. He was still
In the dark. But where was Rosa
mund, and where was the car?
He sat up and felt his head.
There was a lump on the back of
It like a tennis-ball. His right leg
felt numb. He put down one band
gropingly, anrl touched stone. The
damp cold o'.' It roused him. He
.'.as one match left. He struck It
quickly, and It caught, the soft
damp wood sizzling as the yellow
flame took bold.
He saw wet black rock a drop
to what he thought was water and
bars. The match burnt bis fingers,
and he dropped It on the wet atone.
Jervis came with a tremendous
mental shock to the realization of
where he was. There was only one
place with a barred eiit to the sea,
and that was Old Foxy Flxon'a
Cellar? How In the world had he
got Into Old Foxy Flxon's Cellar?
Why, there weren't halt a dozen
people who knew of Its existence
Basher possibly Janet Tetterley.
Who else?
Himself, of course and Rosa
mund. The dark care filled with pic
tures. Rosamund on a Tlslt at four

foot of the cliffs. That was when
they had found Old Foxy'a Cellar.
At first It looked like any other

moved his leg. It was sot Injured;
it was only numb.
He scrambled up, and the dark
ness filled with rockots and pin
wheels. He bad to alt down again.
His mind cleared, momentarily.
Only a moment aso he bad beard
Rosamund more beside blm In the
darkness: He had leaned forward,
etai someone had knocked him out
I Who? That was the Question,
plnd why?
' He felt about him again. , . .
Atone. . . He got over on to his
jhands and knees and felt farther
'field. One groping hand passed
jroughened ridges and came down
Into a slimy hollow; the other, feel
ing ahead, went over a rounded
(dge and found nothing beyond it.
For a moment Jervis stayed like
that, his left hand slipping, and his
right over the edge of an unknown
drop. Then a sharp splinter ot rock
cut his knee, and halt Involuntarily
(he drew himself back into a sitting
position. What place wns this? A
dark place, and damp with the pas
sage of water.
With Lis mind awakenod to this,
bis ears caught a sound which had
not meant anything until n-ow,
-when he became aware that It had
seen present all the time. It wa.
the sound of water, of the sea.
Everything stood still In his mind
for a moment. Then the sound ot
the sea again. Ills hand wont down
nd toucbod the damp stone. He
put a finger to his mouth, and found
It salt The sound of the sea and
rock with a salt dampness upon It.
, The sea bad boon ovor this
ptone, and not so long ago.
' He began to feel In bis pocket
tor matches. There was a box In
his blazer pocket. He opened It gin
erly and found two matches. Per
haps his hand shook; perhaps the
first match wns rotten. It left a
luminous streak upon the roughened
(lde ot the box, and went out. There
the cave. He showed them the land
ward entrance and explained that
Foxy had used the place to store his
smuggled goods; had put up the
bars to keep out prying Customs
men.
Jervis sat with his palms cold
on the wet stone and recalled
Basher taking them Into Foxy'a
kitchen and down brick steps to a
cellar that was surprisingly dry
and warm Basher moving a barrel
and raising up a tremendous trap
door by the Iron ring In it him
self and Rosamund peering Into the
black uncertainties below.
Well, he was In Old Foxy'a Cellar
and what about It? It became
bltndlngly obvious that It was
Robert Leonard who had put blm
there, and that Rosamund bsd
shown him the way. The question
was, what did they want? And the
answer came pat In Ferdlnand'a
words Nan's words. "Who gets
Weare and the money It anything
happena to you?"
Rosamund got It. And Rosamund
knew about the cellar.
That cold anger gripped him
hard. It turned in on himself. He'd
bad warnings enough, and he had
refused to take them. The taxi ac
cident that hadn't been an accident.
The conveniently rotten bridge over
the ravine. The wheel that had
coma oft his car on the very hill
that wns over him now. Even that
old business ot ten years ago on
Croyston rocks. He believed now
that on each of these occa
sions Leonard had tried to murder
him. He bent his head and listened
Intently. That sound ot the sea,
which had been taint when first he
heard It, was faint no longer. He
could hear It quite plainly. With ton
upon ton ot weight hohlnd It, ths
tide was coming In.
