POULTRYMEN GET
F
A representative group of local poui
trymen saw the showing of the mov
ing picture. "On the Trail of the
Golden Egg" at Grants Pass high
school Saturday, October 3.
Through a series of Interesting and
splendidly photographed scenes on
the big poultry experimental plant
at the General Mills Research Farm,
the audience was shown the extreme
care taken to Insure accuracy in test
work.
Enormous laying houses with their
trap nests and other thoroughly prac
tical equipment for recording egg pro
duction and feed consumption, giant
Incubators in operation, and a won
derful brooder house with ample room
for 16 lots of chicks at one time,
flashed across the screen to the In
terested watchers.
The camera gave us a glimpse of
the specialists in charge ot this great
farm, weighing baby chicks on deli
cate scales that weigh by grams in
stead of the conventional ounces, and
took us through the laboratory, the
feed room, the egg room, and many
other equally Interesting places on
this unusual farm.
The climax of the show came when
the audience was shown how seem
ingly small Increase In efficiency
could be responsible for enormous in
creases in our Income from each ton
of food consumed. For instance, by
decreasing mortality 3 per cent, and
adding 3 ounces to the average weight
of baby chicks, our Income from one
ton of chick starter would be In
creased $36.
It was splendid entertainment and
instruction and W. 8. Carpenter
and Smith Hughes, instructor of agri
culture at the Grants Pass high school
through whose courtesy "the film was
shown. Is to be commended for his
thoughtfulness In arranging for a lo
cal showing.
Fairbanks Pleases .
Craterian Crowds
Douglas Fairbanks demonstrates In
"Mr. Robinson Crust," which opened
yesterday at the Craterian theatre,
what really can be done with this
type of picture when one enters seri
ously Into Its spirit. Fairbanks of
course Is the main-spring of the pic
ture. Tn several of the sequences he
Is better than he ever has been, and
this Is a very large order. Maria Alba
is hla leading woman, and William
Far n urn exerts his villainous touch
here and there.

NORTON'S RECALL
A number of Applegate district resi
dents, according to reliable reports,
will soon take necessary steps to hav
their names removed from petitions,
seeking the recall of Circuit Judgt H
D. Norton. The signers claim they
signed the recall petitions "when in
a sympathetic mood," and that a later
inquiry revealed that the "wild
charges were hooey."
One of the signers. W. N. (Farmer
Bill) Carl, who ran for the legisla
ture IsjH spring, told Medford friends
laat week that he signed the petition
"in sympathy," and that he and a
number of his neighbors planned to
have their names removed. Carl said
that this step was first broached, fol
lowing a visit of Prof. C. Englehardt to
the Applegate district ten days ago.
with a recall petition. Prof. Engle
hardt was listed in the spring primary
as one of the victims of "injustice" in
Jackson county. Last Friday he paid
a fine Imposed for conviction of as
sault upon a neighbor.
The recall movement was launched
two months ago, and met with high
disfavor In all sections of the county.
Circulators of the petitions are re
ported as still busy. The parentage
of the recall is still a mystery. Its
chief sponsors have been L. A. Banks
and Earl H. Fehl, Republican candi
date for county Judge. In his first
campaign speeches Fehl hurled charges
against Judge Norton and urged all
to sign. Of late, his political remarks
have been devoted to "my policies,"
and cutting the taxes. Fehl, In a
speech here, said, It makes no dif
ference who started the recallit's
started I" Banks attributed the recall
plot to "spontaneous combustion."
