: Announcement was mad at a
meeting at the Baptlat church last
night that October 10 would be the
date of the beginning of the fall
evangelistic campaign to be conduct
ad at that church. Rev. DeVero Pen
hollow, whs was soloist snd song
leader In the Bhannon-Hlgglnbotham
tent meetings held her last year,
has been secured to head up the
musical part of ths program for ths
campaign. Mr. Penhollow was a
(rest favorite In the meetings last
fall, and mad a. host of friends in
Msdford who will be happy at the
news of his return. Pastor W. H.
Xston has been asked by the church
to be the preacher for this csmpslgn.

TORTURE CHARGE
Stat polios were advised this after
noon by the sheriff of Wasco county
that Richard H. Morton, 84, Richard
W. Olle, 34, and Ernest Wright, 31,
arrested by the state police last night,
and held for carrying concealed wea
pons were wanted there for the rob
bery and torturing of an aged man.
The trio an alleged to have violated
the friendliness of their victim, and
stolen 8100 from him. They then,
la asserted, tortured him In an
effort to make him tell where bla
wealth was hidden.
State police about noon located
Morton' family camped In a tent
on Wagner creek.
Morton claims to be a resident of
the Ashlsnd district. The state po
lios say he Is a transient, and has
been hers for a couple of months at
Intervals.
Ths trio will be removed to Wasco
county.

A realUtle revival of the old mining
days when Yreka, wu known as
''Thompson', Dry Dlggln'a" la expected
to draw t hoi wands of visitor to
northern California, on October 7 and
8. The celebration, which has been
named the "Gold Rush" la being put
on by the Treka Miners, booster club,
to revive Interest In gold mining, pro
vide Jobs for the unemployed and
raise funds to help take care of the
city's destitute during the coming
winter. Assisting the "Treka Miners"
la the newly organised "Oold Diggers"
organ! ration composed of Yreka wo
men, who are doing their bit to make
the project a auoceM. The "Oold Dig
gers" are advertising the coming event
by appearing in old-time costumes,
and the male sex are attired In pio
neer garb and novel whiskered effects
which baffle description.
A big two-day program Is planned
for the entertainment of the many
southern Oregon and northern Cali
fornia folks who will attend the "Gold
Rush." Sports evente. Including bi
cycle races, a football game, cham
pionship horeeAhoe pitching contest
and other items of Interest have al
ready been arranged for. Pioneer pros
pectors will compete In the mucking
and panning contests, as well as the
rock drilling competition. An old
time fiddlers contest will be held
Friday night and dances of both old
time end modern variety will hold
forth each night. Gambling games of
every description will run day and
night and a special bank will be
opened to provide "'phony" money
for the various games snd conces
sions.
One of the leading events of the
entire two-day program will be the
pioneer parade which takes place Sat
urday, October 8 at 10 a. m. Many

pass In review slong the streets of
the old mining town, where In years
past they were the order of the day.
Men. women and children garbed In
the costumes of the early fifties will

will be taken, preserving a perma
nent record of this unique pioneer
celebration, ,

victs were given conditional pardons.

a life term on a second degree mur
der charge, received a commutation
to a 25-year sentence.
Conditional pardons were' issued to
Lincoln Rose of Douglas county and
Jack Edwards of Multnomah county.
Rose was received September 2, 1031,
to serve flv years for Involuntary
manslaughter. Edwards was received
from Multnomah county March 23,
1027, to serve 10 years for asssult and
robbery while armed with a dangerous

he remain under supervision of the
