NEW YORK (AP) The christian
church, which made lt early gain
during a period of "hard tlmea." la
Increasing its membership aa a direct
result of the depression, Dr. George
Linn Kleffer. president of the Amer
ican Religious Statisticians, believes.
The gain In 1931 waa much greater
than that in 1930. Dr. Kleffer asserts,
but the figures compiled by him for
The Christian Herald do not furnish
a basis for comparison between the
two years.
89 Million Church Members
A five-year gain of 4,143,049 over
the figure of 54.525,715 established
by the government census of 1926
is noted by Dr. Kleffer, the total
membership In 1931 being placed at
59,268,794, the largest in history. Ac
cording to government estimates, the
1931 population was 124,070,000.
Church history ahows that Chris
tianity rose among the poor. When
poverty, famine, disease, and war
were undermining the apparent pros
Ity of the Roman empire, millions of
people turned to the new religion,
with the result that early in the
fourh century it won full state recog
nition. In recent times, according to Dr.
Kleffer's figures, the churches not
only have gained in membership de
' cade after decade, but also have in
creased the proportion of that mem
bership to the total population of the
country; that Is, church membership
has been growing faster than the
population.
In 1810 In the United States there
were only 85 church members in
every 1000 population. In 1930 there
were 398. Today there are 401. Dr.
Herman C. Weber, next editor of the
Handbook of the Churches, points
out that the adult (13 years and
over) church membership in 1931 was
64 per cent of the adult population.
Churches, Ministers Increase
The religious bodies also have In
creased the number of churches snd
ministers. In five years the churches
have increased by 6177 from 231,543
In 1926 to 237,720 in 1931. The min
isters numbered 226,155 in 1931, an
Increase of 2538 over the year before.
"I believe that the depression has
occasioned a definite Increase In
church membership," said Dr. Kleffer
who besides being the head of the
religious statisticians Is a leader In
the United Lutheran church.
"The church waa founded in the
midst of hard times, and there is
always an awakening of Interest In it
when the world Is troubled. We are
witnessing a return to normalcy. In
other words, men and women are
going back to the beliefs and prac
tices Implanted In them as children.
"The reports from the few bodies
that have tabulated figures since I
worked out my totals Indicate that
the membership gains are continu
ing." ,

CHAPTER ACTIVE
Co-operating with the governor's
relief committee In Lane county, the
Lane county chapter of the Ameri
can Red Cross la carrying out an
extensive plan for relief work this
winter, according to word from that
city.
A total of 47,000 Jars or tins of
fruits and vegetables have been
canned, and 100,000 pounds of
prunes are to be dried for the win
ter use.
The group Is now working out
plans for the distribution of staples.
Families are to obtain these by work
ing on shares and obtaining grocery
credits.
The organizations will give 350
jars of fruit and vegetables to each
dependent family of four, and cor
responding amounts to various sized
families.
Boy Is Killed By
Fall Under Train
HOOD RIVER, Ore., Sept. 23. (JF)
An unidentified boy about 10 years
of age fell from an eastbound train
here late last night and was killed.
Two companions told authorities the
boy had received a telegram from his
mother in Arkansas, telling him of
his father's death and urging him to
hurry home.

STOCKHOLM (AP) T h e prince
of Wales' tour of Scandinavian coun
tries in October, in connection with
a traveling exposition of English In
dustry, finds quick Interpretation
here as a move by England to safe
guard her trade Interests in this sec
tion of Europe.
What England seeks especially, It Is
assumed. Is to ward off Ill-feeling
that might possibly result from the
Ottawa, conference agreements.
Fortunately for England, the Scan
dinavian states, with the possible ex
ception of Denmark, experienced no
undue alarm while the Ottawa con
ference was In progress. The money
exchange restrictions set up by Den
mark, now dispensed with, were an
Indication of that country's concern.
In general, however, there was a
strong feeling that England would
be duly appreciative of Its yearly vol
ume of trade in this direction.
With the results of that conference
still to be learned In detail. England
has seized upon the psychological
moment to assure northern Europe
that her Intentions are of the best.
Among other things England pos
sibly fears that the moral effect of the
Ottawa conference may interfere with
her efforts to regain the Scandinavian
coal trade.
Loss of that trade during England's
coal strike In 1926, proved a setback
from which British coal exporters
have yet to recover.
In 1925 Sweden imported 3.663,263
metric tons of coal. Including 2,869,
064 1 from England and only 85,938
tons' from Poland. Then came the
etrlke and Poland took prompt ad
vantage of it. Last year Sweden, out
of a total coal Import of 4.534,623
tons, took 2,612.596 from Poland and
1,069,168 from England.
It is such matters as this which
make England desirous of cementing
her friendly relatione with Scandl
cavla. England has several distinct advantages-
in trade negotiations. The
British empire Is the outstanding
market for the timber, wood pulp, and
paper that come out of Norway, Swe
den, and Finland.
The British domain Is Denmark's
bread and butter, for that little
country last year sold 64.6 per cent
of Its expors to England, mostly daiiy
products.
In Sweden, however, there Is a
growing agitation to buy less from
Germany as that nation cancelled her
trade agreement with Sweden two
months ago.
