That WW tha hasrwnlng messsta
sent to n!ne-yeer-ol4 Mary rranoaa
Holloway of Medford by Governor
Franklin Roosevelt In my brief Inter
view with him late Wednesday after
noon at the Portland Hotel.
And "perseverance" la written In
delibly In those clear blue eyes and
etroaf Jaw of th man who bee bat
tled a bad case of Infantile paralysis
to an almost complete cure. In spite
of the rigors of active political lire.
"Wherever ha goes," his ohlef aide
confided In me before I sained the
Interview, "paralytica floe to him for
advice. Re's always Interested In
their met ani Ores all he esn to
help them."
Thar war two of them (pathetic
figures, both In middle life) waiting
la the crowd which milled and surg
ed In the long hallway outside rranfc
11a Roosevelt's hotel room. He saw
tham. too, and they came out with
cheerful smiles.
Capitalizing upon my experience
"getting to" Al Smith In New York,
I didn't waste any time asking per
mission of Roosevelt's subordinates.
A elmpla note to tha "chief" himself
did the trick and I knew I was going
to aaa him for three hours before I
was finally admitted eastern gentle
men of the press to the contrary.
He was delightful to meet great,
big boyish smile and the kind of a
handclasp that doesn't end too soon.
"Sorry I can't go through Medford,"
he said, "but we may get back
through the pear country soma other
day. Tou see, I'm not always my
own boas on these trips."
Informed that "my editor" onoe
worked with him on the Harvard
Crimson la college days, he was all
Interest.
"Who was that?" he asked.
"Robert W. Ruhl."
. "Bob Ruhl?" -Roosevelt sat bolt up
right In his chair and beamed. "Ill
aay I remember Bob. fine fellow.
Ha was a year ahead of ma In school."
He laughted delightedly and lost a
second In pleasant reminiscence.
"So he's still In the newspaper
game," ha mused. Then, suddenly
alert again: "Say, tall him hello for
ma, won't your I'd surely like to see
him." So Mr. Ruhl la not, as he
humorously suspects, "the forgotten
man."
Big Jim Parley waa also the Inter
esting subject of an Interview all his
own. Dashing la and out through
tha crowds, his smooth, smiling coun
tenance never seemed to show the
least bit of strain or fatigue. This,
la aplta of he fact that he was up
half of Tuesday night, due to tha
change la train schedule, and had
been meeting every Democrst and
his brother slnoe esrly hours this
morning.
Re has an uncanny memory for
names and faces (I'm apsaklng from
personal experience aa well as hear
aay) and hsa an enthusiasm and seat
for his work that can only be equal
led by Roosevelt himself.
ma eyes are green and shrewd. He
aaa a way of turning the tables on
one In an Interview and putting his
Interrogator on the spot. It's Infor
mation Jim Parley la after, and the
spotlight of publicity Interests him
only so far aa It casta Its rote-getting
rays upon hie candidate.
Aaked about the effect of the Jamea
Walker Investigation upon Roosevelt's
campaign, he attempted to waive the
question. Persistence In that direc
tion brought the nearest spprosch
to Irritation peroelved upon the coun
tenance of the genial manager It
was the mere cessation of the good
natured smile for a brief second.
"Franklin Roosevelt didn't stop to
think whether It waa going to hurt ur
help him," he said. "He was after
facte and he let the chips fall where
they might. He'a a fighter, all right.
If you don't believe It, you ought to
rub shoulders with him some time."
Next, there were SO minutes with
Franklin Roosevelt's daughter Anna,
Mrs. Curtis Dill. She la tall and vary
slender Indeed. Blond hair, done at
a knot In th back and large blue
eyes.
Sh reminds me of schoolgirl
barely out of th growing stsge, who
is thrilled to the finger tips with th
whole adventure. In fact, she said so.
"Ws're having the time of our lives
on this trip Betsy (Jamea Roose
velt's wife) and I. Our Job is to meet
all th women aa well aa a number
of th organleera. Bvsry one la so
sweet to us. And you know every
so often we're able to slip away and
have the merriest little Jaunt all our
own. I love It."
One of her favorite outdoor sports
Is fishing and arte was anxious to go
on a special fishing expedition ar
ranged for her. However, she would
not leave her father's headquarters
while there were any duties to per
form. "You see, I'm sort of a private sec
retary and Intermediary for father,"
she laughed.
Th mention of Al Smith's .name
and his attitude toward Roosevelt,
prior to the convention, resulted In
nothing but praise for the former
New York governor.
"We're all fond of Al Smith." she
said warmly. "Yea, I've known him
and his whole family for years and
years. He's truly a great man and
an Interesting one."
James Roosevelt, who might be a
younger Franklin, except that he la
much slighter thsn his (ether, la very
much In demand. He Is a splendid
tslker and fills practically every en
gagement his fsther Is unable to fill
on the tour,
He mad th principal address at
the Democratic luncheon given the
party at th Hotel Portland. The
governor, who had Just returned from
Oreshsm, where he addressed a large
audience at th Multnomah county
fair, was having lunch In his room
and dictating his speech for the even
ing. The auditorium, with a capacity of
8,000, waa packed at 8 o'clock and
several thousands turned away. We
lucky onee about too who had tick
etsoccupied th levated arena on
the platform.
It waa a great day for "us Demo
crata," brim full of human Interest
and colorful sidelights. More will
follow tomorrow If I can get It at
least that Interesting interview I had
with the next prospective "chef de
cuisine" at th Whit House.
By the way, the name Roosevelt la
pronounced aa though there were
only on "o" In It, and that a long
one, according to Mr. Farley.
