A CURIOUS SURPRISE
tERVIS shrugged hli shoulders at
Nan'a passionate outbursL - -
No, be thought. Nan can't par tor
what Roaamuad did to me when
Ibe threw ma over. Neither could
he forget It; ao longer waa It poa
ilble to t rat Rosamund's sex.
To break tbe tension, Jervls
turned abruptly awa and, picking
up the volume of Who'l Who, went
ever to the shelf and put It back in
Its place. He atood (or a minute
or two looking at flrst one book
and then another and whistling
softly to himself. The tune bother
ed Nan because ahe couldn't put a
name to It.
Bhe would hare given the world
twice over to undo what Rosamund
had done to blm. Bhe wondered
whether ahe would ever be able to
undo IU Just now, when hla eyes
had laughed, ahe had aoen the bit
ternesa and the hardness that were
nnder tbe laughter. It hurt more
than wben he frowned. He frowned
easily, and It meant very little;
. but when he laughed, ber heart
ached for blm.
He tuned away from the book
shelves and came baok to the win
dow. Hla face wore a bantering
look.
"Well, I'd like to know just why
you married me, and Just wbat'a at
the bottom of all this nonsense
about Robert Leonard. A deaf and
dumb Idiot can aee that you've got
It In for blm and I must say I d
tike to know why."
Nan tipped her bead back, met
bis eyes, and aald seriously,
"He's trying to kill yon."
"Yea, you aald that before he
rode me down In a tail, and he
arranged for the bridge over tbe
ravine to rot In the spray. Come,
you know. It's not good enough! But
what I do want to know la why.
What has poor old Leonard done to
be cast for tbe part of first mur-
lererT It seems a bit far-fetched,
lon't Ton think? And It would In
terest me quite a lot to know what
put It Into your head."
"It's no use my telling you," said
Nan "you wouldn't believe me."
"I'm afraid I shouldn't But you're
probably of a very hopeful dispo
sition you might try."
Bhe shook her bead.
"It wouldn't be any uae."
"How can you tell It you don't
try?"
A smile just touched ber lips
and was gone again.
"You're never going to believe
anyone again. It would be waste of
time."
"You might convert me."
"Could I, Jervls?"
"I don't think so, Nan. But then
that makes It all the more exciting
(or you. There's always an off
ehance."
She had been atandlng looking
np at blm; now ahe came a step
nearer.
"He la trying to kill you."
"How Intriguing! Have yon any
notion why?"
"It's something to do with the
money."
, "I'm afraid that' where you slip
np. Poor old Leonard's not In the
running he wouldn't get a penny.
It's distinctly to his Interest to let
me linger on and touch me tor an
occasional ltd bill.
"Does he do that?" (That meant
that he waa bard up perhapa des
perately bard up.)
"He does," aald Jervis. "Bo you
see I'm more use to him alive than
dead."
"It he killed yon" aald Nan.
Bhe atopped, because It waa a dread
ful thing to say.
"Yes do go on. It he killed me?'
"Rosamund would get every
thing."
He gava her a sharp glance. 80
ahe waa working round to bis will.
Bhe evidently didn't believe In let

He nodded.

He stepped over the low window

"Mrs. Weare baa gone to bed with
a headache, air and these are the
papers you wished to aee."
Jervla took them to the study.
Bp abe bad gone to bed with a
headache. He wondered It he had
made her cfy. A faint tinge ot
triumph Just touched his mood. He
bad lived ten years in the same
house as Rosamund, and he bad
never seen her weep.
Nan'a llpa had trembled when
he touched them ahe had trembled
from bead to foot and had run
away she had looked as It abe
waa going to cry. Perhaps ahe was
lying In the big four-post bed cry
ing her heart out He had a picture
of her In his mind, lying there In
tbe shade of the red curtains, with
bar head on her arm and her face
hidden, weeping scalding teara. For
some obscure reason the picture
gave blm a feeling ot pleasure.
He tore open tbe long envolope
which ahe had sent blm. There
were halt a doien letters on thin
foreign paper, and a slanting pencil
scrawl signed Nan. It aald:
Here are my father's letters

There waa a blister on the corner
