XE are glad that the Hutchinson family have been rescued
" from a watery grave, after the crack-up of their plane
on the barren coast of Greenland. Death to any of them, would
have been too high a price to pay, even for the needed lesson
such a tragedy would have taught.
But we hope, the fortunate
ture, will be ascribed where it
and that Mr. and Mrs. Hutchinson will not offer their children
again, as hostages to fortune, and their desire to shine in the
limelight of international aeronautics.
QTAGING trans-Atlantic flights for publicity purposes alone
is a questionable procedure
only one individual without dependents is involved. But where
parents, with young children, risk the lives of the latter, and
themselves, just to add novelty and color to the venture, it is
time publie opinion called a halt.
We trust when the Hutchinson family return to New York,
that the people of our modern Babylon, go a little slow on
ticker tape, reception , committees and the turning of movie
camera cranks.
Everyone rejoices the "Flying family" have been able to
return safe and sound, but there should be sufficient coolness
in the reception, to convince them and other air and publicity
minded families that the people of the country don't care to
have them repeat the effort, or
followed, until long ocean flights have been rendered less haZ'
ardous.
Has Roosevelt Gone Republican?

The Republican administration has opposed a farm subsidy,
and refused to sanction the McNary-IIaugcn bill. Roosevelt
does the same thing.
The Republican administration stands for a protective tariff
on farm products. Mr Roosevelt flays the Smoot-IIawlcy' bill
(ailing it for campaign purposes the Grundy tariff) but in
another portion of his speech, endroses "a tariff protection to
the farmer, similar to the protection acoorded the American
manufacturer."
r .
'T'HAT is precisely the Republican position. , Mr. Roosevelt

rates j but only a few weeks ago in his New Jersey speech, he
declared he wanted labor in this country protected from pauper
labor in foreign lands, which is the cornerstone of G. 0. P.
tariff prooodure. '
THAT is what the Republicans want, and that is all that
party has tried to secure.
In short, in his speeches thus far, Mr. Roosevelt demonstrates
by his own words, that the differences between his party and
the opposing party on the farm problem and the tariff, arc the
differences between twecdle dum and tweedle dee merely
those superficial differences between the "Outs" who want to

speech, an alarmed citrus grower wrote to a Los Angolcs editor,
asking if the Democratic candidate's policy of tariff reduction

milk and Chinese eggs." '
A member of the Democratic state central committee has
tened to say, that auch was emphatically not the case, that
Governor Roosevelt favored granting every necessary tariff pro
tection to the California farmer.
If this is true and no doubt it is, and as Mr, Roosevelt has
pledged himself to a protective

Tired of Bible Blasphemy
To the Editor:
Although I am only one of th
common people, and my opinion may
not carry great weight with clever
writers like newspaper editors, I do
think that many right-thinking and
clear-thinking persona wlU agree with
m In the following statement.
We think that too much quoting
and mis-quoting of the Bible 1 being
done by Mr. Bank In hi Dally Newa
and by Mr. Earl Pehl In his Record
Herald and In hi speeches.
It may be considered clever to
point black white, and whit black,
but the limit of Christian patience la
reached when Inspired Scripture is
quoted with meanlnga which th
Lord God never Intended, and util
ized to serve political purposes. Thl
mli-use of Scripture 1 a amart trick,
because unfortunately many good
and devout people awallow It whole;
they don't top to analyze the quota
tion or the ulterior purpose back of
It; they Just Jump at the conclusion
that any one who quotes the Blblels
sincere and must have had Christian
training and therefore Is Just the
man to vote for or believe.
As an example, consider Mr. Fehl'
front page editorial In his Record
Herald of September 1st. He makes
two statement, commenting on the
Mall Trlbune'a looking for a father
of the Judge Norton recall movement.
"The Bible eay: 'Call no man
father'." "There are a lot of
.creation In this world that know
who their mother l. but few
could wear to their father'
Identity."
In th first place, the Bible Intend
ed no such meaning to thl quotation
as Mr. Pehl Implies. Combined wltb.
the vulgar statement auggestlng Ille
gitimacy of many people. I consider
thl mis-use of the Bible not only
disgusting but positively sacrlllglou
and blasphemous.
Among God' ten commandment
handed down to u 1 thl one: "Thou
ahalt not take the name of the Lord
thy God In vain." While many people
apply this commandment to awearlng
and cursing. It also applies to twist
ing the Word of God to devious
meaning for ulterior purposes. It
would seem to me that one who doe
so should worry more about the re
action or the wrath to come, than he
would from taking the name of the
Lord In vain when he loses his tem
per In his office or business and
curses incidentally. ,
Mr. Banks often flavor hi editor
ials with Biblical quotations, and In
his Sunday Issue of September 11th,
stressed editorially the many Bible
verses recited in Mr. Fehl's speech
against Judge Norton two nights pre
vious at the armory. But I think he
reached the limit In hla "Once In a
While" of September 13th, when he
compared Earl Fehl to Christ. "Jesu
of Nazareth had harmed no man. Mr.
Earl H. Fehl haa harmed no man.
Jesus had violated no law, either
legal or moral. Earl Fehl had violated
no law either legal or moral, ete.,
etc." '
During the primary political cam
paign, on last June 16th, the Rev.v
Jos. M. Johnson of Central Point had
the courage to dare to suggest to Mr.
Banks and the Dally News that a halt 1
be called in the mud-sllnglng cam
paign of several months' duration,
and ended with a Biblical quotation
about Judging others. Back came
Banks with a vitriolic editorial
against this minister of the gospel,
Including a quotation from the Scrip
tures to prove that he (Banks) wa
right.
Is every editor and political candi
date RIGHT, Just because he. can
quote the Scriptures?
"ONLY A WOMAN"
(Name on File)
P. S.: I will not here quote the
Scripture, but may I refer the reader
to a prayerful reading of the follow
ing paassges of scripture: Titus 1:15
16: 3 Corinthians 11:13-15; 1 These.
11:14-34.
To the Editor:
May I ask through the columns of
your paper. If any of your reader
can tell me how to make raisins,
from Thompson's Seedless grapes.
Yours truly,
