League Leaders Take Two

Pirates Win Eleventh

By HUGH 8. FULLERTON, JR.
(Associated Press Sporti Writer)
Even though the Cubs and tht Pr
rate are keeping the National league
pennant race steamed up so that they
almost monopolize the fans' attention,
there atlU is time to consider the
case of Charles Fred "Red Lucas of
Cincinnati.
In his seventh season with the Reds,
Lucas appears to have reverted to the
days when a pitcher was expected to
play almost as often as an outfielder,
The husky redhead, who has fallen
below the .600 mark In games won
and lost only once In his six seasons
with a usually weak club, may repeat
In that respect again this year, but
he seemed certain to lead them all In
the matter of finishing what be
starts.
Finished ST Oat of SO.
1 Lucas has started 20 games so far
and he has been in there at the end
of 27 of them. He ran up a string of
18 complete games In a row. failed
twice In a short time In mid-July
and since then has made a new etrlng
of eight, unfortunately for hut rec
ord, he has won only 13 games and
lost 10,
Lucas took It on the chin again
yesterday, although he hurled a fairly
good game against the Giants. He
bad a 6-3 margin In the seventh In
ning, then ran Into a home run as
sault that brought three runs end
cost hlra the decision.
Cubs Lose Two.
The woes that usually greet the
leading clubs of the west when they
start their final trip of the season
turned up on schedule time. Chi
cago's league-leading Cubs ran Into
grief In Boston and took a double de
feat from the Braves, 11 to 4, and
S to 0.
The Pirates clipped one game off
Chicago's lead by splitting a two-ply
program wltb Brooklyn. They had
no trouble winning their eleventh
straight game, 8 to 8. Freddy Hel
mach's portslde hurling proved a bit
too much In the nightcap and Brook
lyn won, 4 to 2.
Dizzy Dean, who had won his lest
four games for 8t. Louis, also felt
.the effects of going on the load and
lost a 8 to 6 encounter to the Phillies,
There were no American league
games scheduled.

of their premier slugger. Babe Ruth,
who left suddenly for New York last
night, explaining to Manager Joe Mc
Carthy In a long distance call that he
was 111.
Mark Rotti, club secretary, said
Ruth told McCarthy, who had re
mained In Buffalo, N. Y., over the
open date, that he had been seized
with ahrfnmlnnl nutria artri faiMrf i
nad appendicitis.
In New York, Roth aald. the Babe
will be examined and treated by the

club might have to go into the world
series without Its famous home run
hitter.
START FOOTBALL
PRACTICE EARLY
By Adrian Fraley,
In response to the football call Is
sued Tuesday, over 40 members re
sponded to try for a position on the
Tiger team. Tuesday night suits were
Issued and practice was called for
Wednesday night, starting the grid
season In earnest. Many of last year's
veterans have graduated, therefore,
there are many holes to be filled In
the line. There are about .13 vet-
erana back to don suits.
New prospects look exceptionally
well this year, and It Is believed that
many of the veterans will have to
fight to retain their old positions.
This year's team will miss the serv.
vice of Cunnlnghsm end White,
tackles, and Bhreeve at end. Harring
ton will no longer call signals for
the Red snd Black. Oreaves, who
played end last year, will be back,
but will probably be shifted to an
other position. Max Rse, Ed Bennett
and Tom White will probably vie for
the end positions. Kindred Is work'
lng for the center post. Last yeara
guards are back, and are expected
to show real form early In the sea
son. Qlem and Mlnear are the guards
who upheld the honors of last year.
New material will be worked Into
shape for the tackle positions. Ftcht
ner, Schlel, Qtllnsky and Knlps will
be back to fill positions In the back-
field.
This year the Tigers are getting
underway early In the season becsuse
of the games which come shortly
arter school opens. The Red and
Black have a game scheduled In two
weeks.
