WASHINGTON, Sept. B (AP) Dis
covery of the sit of a great Solutrtan
workshop In the foothills of the Py

nounced today by the Smithsonian
Institution.
This open-air factory where scien
tists believed craftsmen of approxi

and weapons out of flint and quartr
Ite extended over several acres, now
forest covered. It lies within a few
miles of the cave of Marsoulas where
the Smithsonian Institution and the
University of Toulouse are conduct
ing a Joint archaeological enterprise.
J, Townsend Russell, collaborating
archeologist of the Smithsonian staff,
made the discovery while passing
through the forest over a rain washed
cart track. His attention was drawn
to some obviously man made flint
flakes. Soundings through the area
revealed the wide extent of the an
cient shop.
The site Is believed to mark ft
transition stage from the Solutrlan
to the succeeding Aurlgnacean period.
The workmanship of the Solutrlan
artisans represents an important stage
in human culture the acme of the
chipped stone Industry and the transi
tion to an age when stone tools and
weapons were fashioned by grinding.
It Is considered the second stage In
the chronology of cave man culture.
Toward the end of the Solutrlan pe
riod came the revolutionary discovery
of the possibility of making tools by
grinding instead of chipping.
