LOSING INMATES
SALEM. Sept. a. OP) The state
training school for boya la the only
attte Institution which haa shown
a population deereaae during the past
10 years, figures tabulated by the
stte board of control reveal.
All the other Institutions have ex
perienced large Increases.
On July 1 of this year there were
89 boys at the training school, com
pared to 143 for July 1. 1932.
Population at the state penitentiary
during the past 10 yeara haa risen
from 489 to 839; at the Oregon state
hospital from 1833 to 3105: and at
i the eastern Oregon hospital from 549
to 1178.
Current populations in other atate
Institutions follow:
State home for feeble minded 820.
state tuberculosis hospital 241, east
ern Oregon tuberculosis hospital 128.
Industrial school for girls 77, old sol
dlera' home 94 and Oregon employ
ment institution for adult blind 68.
The records show tht the total
population at these Institutions on
July 1. 1932, was 6627, as comparea
win 3992 on July 1. 1922.

o clock Thursday morning on the Mid
way road by state police, after he
had crashed head-on into the Davis
transfer truck driven by S. W. Kohn.
' Hlglnbotham was arraigned before
Judge Glenn O. Taylor this morning
and his ball was set at $500, when he
pleaded not guilty. Judge Taylor was
presiding at the trial.
No attorney represented the de
fend ant. Only a few spectators were

The 30-year-old Rlsko pitted his
craft and ring experience against the
youth of the former Chicago flsft
peddler and when Referee Matt Brock
held up the hand of the winner at
the end of twelve rounds, the roly
poly, "Jawn" was on top. Brock, him
self, thought Levinsky won, but two
judges decided In favor of the Cleve-lander.

Is Taken For Ride
CHICAGO, Sept. 3 (AP) Walter
Zwollnskt, a gangster w.ho once shot
and killed Edward O'Donnel'a goat
after a quarrel was found slain on
the Southwest aide today. He helped
O'Donnell hustle beer In the same
district several years ago. but lately
had been chauffeur for George Downs,
another liquor dealer, ,
Zwollnskt apparently had been slain
elsewhere and his body driven In his
own car to the alley where It was
found.

Extensive preparations are being
completed this week for the opening
of Medford schools next Tuesday.
September . The general meeting
for school teachers will be held to
morrow afternoon at 1:30 o'clock for
completion of plans.
Test books will be furnlihed by
the district this year to all pupils In
grades one to eight, who turned In
their books laat spring. Superinten
dent E. H. Hedrlck stated thla morn

This provision has been made pos
sible by the gradual purchase of
books by the district over a period
of yeara, and by he pupils relin
quishing books last spring. No special
tax will be levied to obtain books.
Pupils, who did not turn In their
text books last spring will be ex
pected to furnish their own this fall,

day morning In accordance with the
schedule mapped out.

dedication ceremony and celebration
under auspices of the Medford and
Ashland posts of t,he American Leg
ion, waa visited by more than 6000
guests before lights were turned out
last night, Legionnaires reported to
day.
The celebration, which opened with
the parade at 10:30 yesterday morn
ing, was also attended by an Immense
crowd, which continued to baseball
game In the afternoon, boxing match
and dance In the evening.

son for conservation of foods is sttll
at hand, many recipes are coming

the winter. One of the latest for
drying corn was telephoned yesterday
by Mra. Lou Jaycox of 635 Mary
street, and read:
Husk and llk corn, cut off cob,
being careful not to cut the kernels
too deep. Put In pan In oven until
It all look cooked. Stir often to
prevent burning. Then put In sun
until thoroughly dry, usually about
two or three days, but not leave
out during the night as the corn will
turn dark. Place In bag and hang up
In a dry place until used.
To cook: Soak corn overnight. then
cover with water and simmer slowly
for two to three hours, season with
salt, butter and milk (or cream).
