Announced Wednesday RADIO FINGER TO EXPLORE ECLIPSE ON AUGUST 31 ST Signal Will Be Shot Aloft Into Moon's Shadow From New England to 'Feel Out' Strange Solar Happenings Ry HOWARD W. BI.AKESLFB. Associated Press Science Editor. BOSTON, Aug. 39. (AP) A soft "hissing" radio signal which will b shot far aloft Into the moon's shadow will make the August 31 eclipse of aha sun in New England the world's first great rsdlo eclipse. This signal la resllv an exploring electrical finger with which scien tists will attempt to "feel out" tha strange things happening to radio waves up to 300 miles aloft. To Detect Two Eclipse,. The beam, moreover, Is expected to detect two eclipses. One la tha das- r.llng totality which millions of spec tators hope to see. The other la an unseen phenomenon. This Invisible thing Is mad of the shower of electrical particles believed to fall continually from tha face ox the aim at a speed of 1000 miles a. socond, which Is much slower than light. Against these particles tha moon will act like a parasol, 340,000 miles above the earth'a upturned face. This test waa suggested by odd be havior of radio during previous total eclipses of the eun. It la expected to show more of the reasons for dif ferences between day and night re ception. These are believed due to electrified layers of atmosphere called lonlrd layers ranging from less than 100 miles to 300 miles aloft. Radio Roofa Reflect Waves. They ara radio "roofa" reflecting the broadcasting waves back to earth, thtts accounting for radio signals trav eling around the world. They ara also believed to account for soma at the Imperfections In home and other reception of programs. One theory holds that tha layers are formed by the sun's ultra-violet light. Another ascribes them to that shower of electrified particles. Mora positive knowledge la hoped to be) of uee ultimately for malting better ra dio sets. The slgnala will be sent out from Douglaa Hill, Maine, In the center of the 100-mlle wide path of total eclipse. They will begin at a .m.. I. S. T., six and a halt hours before total eclipse and last until 8 p.m. Radio amateurs all over the world have been Invited to help by receiv ing the signals and reporting their variations. . Short Wave Signal. It will be a short wave algnal, leea than 100 meters, a "pure" wave, which registers on seta aa a aoft hiss, rs will be sent Jointly by the Perkins observatory of Ohio Wesleyan Uni versity, Delaware, Ohio, under tha direction of Dr. Harlan T. Stetson, and the Warner and Swasey observatory of Case School of Applied Selene. Cleveland, under the direction of J. J. Nassau. A special radio sending station has been eet upon Douglaa Hill. The signals will be received and atudled at Cast School IB Cleveland. FOR WORLD FAIR CHICAOO.
