IRENE Dunne, great novel, the
directors havo condensed all of the
beauty and pathoa created by her
pen, and shunned enough of the aor

ed at the close of her story, to give
the motion picture a pleasingly dra
matic ending.
They have also given to Irene Dunne
In "Back Streets" a vehicle by which
she climbs to heights, which far ex
ceed 'the glory that wai here In Edna
Ferber'a "Clmmarron." And have
brought John Boles out of the "sing
class" Into, what, the nowspaper

Friday night at the Holly described
a "real stardom" with exclamation
points. Italics and underlines for the

But to Ircno Dunne go the laurels
As Ray Schmidt, "the tonleat girl In
Cincinnati, lust a little bit fly,:' she
gives a characterization so real that
those, who see her one day, will re
member her long Into tomorrow with
more than a slight lump In the
throat. She gives the Jaded audience
full license to resort again to tears
which critics have often admitted
are far more satisfying than smiles.
As the girl, who walks, for love

Waler Saxell'a world, ahe creates
glimpse of life that la real, not
reformists would have It, perhaps, but
aa greater powers have made It.
The picture will open for regular

who have yet before them the pleas

Applications for help from needy
Medford citizens are lucrenslng to
such an extent at the Foursquare
Gospel Light House. 401 East Fifth
street, that Mrs. Estelle Jones, pastor,
today Issued an appeal for clothing,
furniture, foodstuffs, and money.
During the pant three days two
unusually distressing cases of poverty
came to the attention of Mrs. Jones
and were taken care of, she said. In
one family seven children who had
been subsisting on a diet of corn
were found 111. Food was provided
In another case a man and his wife
and wwn chiWn were found itarv.
lng. They had been too proud to
ask for help. Food was furnished
them.
The Light House Is particularly in
need of shoes, children's shoes, beds,
bedding, foodstuffs of all kinds, and
finds. Thoe connected with the in
stitution give their services without
pay and every article donated to this
Institution reaches people who need
help. There Is an unusual demand for
men's clothing and the Institution
has given away practically all It has
received,
A commissary Is operated for fam
ilies of Medford. No family ever is
turned away. At present fruit Is
being canned on Wednesday after
noons and the institution Is In need
of volunteer workers In order that
this activity may be carried on dally
until the season closes.
Milk also ts distributed daily to
needy families.
The Light House can use practically
any article of clothing or furniture
which la donated. The institution Is
badly In need of funda and has been
mlnlstrrlng to Medford people at a
remarkably low expense.
