matter most In Insn politics don't
apeak to each other.
If they pass in one of the darlc cor
ridors of Lelnster House, where the
dall meets, they make no sign of
recognition, unless that In Itself is

In fact", they dislike ths sound of
each other's names, and the personal
pronoun "ho" Is frequently used as
designation.
Brothers In Revolt.
A few years ago they were brothers

the British.
They are, of course, Eamon de Va
lcra, president of the Irish Free Stats
executive council and William T. Cos
grave, his predecessor In that office.
Cosgrave and de Valera are as dis
similar In their political philosophy
as they are in physical Appearance.
Tall, dark, deeply serious in coun
tenance, de Valera Is a "black" Irish
man, showing the Spanish blood of
his father, as ao mnny other Irlnh yet
show the centuries-old contact with
Spain.
Cotgriue Dapper.
Cosgrave. on the other hand, la al
most dapper in appearance, a snndy
halrcd, blue-oyed Gael, Hla move
ment are quick, nervous, where de
Valera is slow, solemn.
Cosgrave comes from the merchant
class and wan himself once a pros
perous provisions merchant, De Va
lera grew up to be a professor of
mathematics. '
Thus Cosgrave, In a sense, may be
more a realist, more concernod with
keeping business good and going
while de Valera has his eyes fixed
on the distant goal.
Both are intensely religious; both
tremendously sincere In their hope;
for a better Ireland. Neither has any
love for the empire, but differ as to
what should be done about It.
