Dodgers' Invasion of West
Receives 7 to 4 Setback
When Chicago Sluggers
Pound Three Pitchers
By Cajie Talbot,
(Associated Press Sports Writer.)
Victorious In their tint eniege-
ment with Brooklyn's torm troops,
the Chicago Cuba dug In behind
four and one-half game lead today
and prepared to deal another blow
for the cause a bigger and better
world series on the shores of Lane
Michigan.
The Dodgers, who Invaded the west
with high hopes of crashing through
the Cubs' barrage and" again making
a race out of the National league,
were repulsed In yesterday's encoun
ter, 7 to 4. What was more, they
didn't look at all like a team that
might ever stop the Chicago pennant
drive.
Pound Three Pitchers.
Three of their pitchers, Including
the brilliant Van Mungo, were pound
ed for 10 hits, and their fielding was
spotty. The Cubs, led by BlUy Her
man with three rousing hits, made
alx of their hits good for extra bases
and sewed up the game with a four'
run drive In the fourth Inning.
Pittsburgh failed to take adven
tage of Brooklyn's reverse, losing to
the Phillies, 9 to 8, and remaining
In third place. .
Dlzsy Dean did an admirable job
of beating ths Giants. The Cards'
eocentrlo star yielded only flvs hits
.and drove in four runs with a home
run and a single. Pepper Martin
was his little helper, hitting two
doubles and a single and stealing
base.
Boston and Cincinnati played a
dead heat for the afternoon, the
Braves winning the first, 6 to a, and
the Beds squaring matters, S to 1,
behind Larry Benton's noble pitch'
tag.
Homers Beat A's.
Jim Levey of the St. Louis Browns
pounded a homerun with one on in
the llth Inning to defeat the Ath
letics, 8 to 8. Homeruns by McNair,
Dykes and Foxx accounted for all the
A's runs.
Monte Weaver's pitching and John
ny Kerr's timely hitting gave Wash
ington a 2 to l verdict over ueiroii.
Kerr knocked across both the wln
nere' runs ss Weaver scored his 19th
victory.
Pitcher Ted Lyons scored a per
sonal triumph over the Boston Bed
Sox, 7 to 3. In addition to keeping
nine hits well spaced, the White Box
1 star drove In tnree runs with a dou-
r hie and two singles and scored once
A similar achievement was credited
to Charley ' Ruffing of the Yankees,
who racked up his 15th victory at
the expense of the Cleveland Indians,
8 to 3.

With the spproschlng dedication of
the new Jackson county courthouse,
on September 1. valley ball fans and
managers are searching about for the
best available clubs to set at each
other's throats In what must be
grand holiday affair as well at
championship game.
No one Is abls to lay a finger on
an undisputed top-notcn nan team
In the valley. Grants Pass makes
claims, but rumor has it that that
worthy nine has carefully evaded
clashes on foreign territory. It has
met all comers en ths horns diamond
with a marked degree of success, but
the Cavemen's real prowess cannot be
determined from a campaign confined
to the Climate City.
The Talent nine, on the other hand,
la pointed toward sure championship,
in the eyea of many of the valley's
fans. -They hare roped in a lion's
share of the baseball laurels of south
ern Oregon, meeting all corners. !
Jacksonville and Medford have both ,
organized a group of all-stars Into
title-contending outfits and a thorn
In the attempts of many a valley
team to snare ths crown,
The breaking up of the league Has
evidently turned ths bag upside down
and spelled out such an antagonistic
array of teams that the situstlon has
become one over which managers de
clare they have lost considerable
sleep.
Baseball promoters are hoping that
the melee will be untangled at least
to some extent In the courthouse
dedication program.
