CALLED BY DEATH

. ' 'John Franda "Dick" Hay, well
known resident of Central Point, and
southern Oregon, passed away at his
home Tuesday evening, after an Ml'
ness of. the past two years, paralyslB
being the immediate cause of death.
Mr. Hay waa born at Wlldervllle.
Oregon, Feb. 6. 1889. He was the
youngest son of Mr. and Mra. Jarvls
Hay, old time residents of Kentucky.
HI father passed away in 1899, and
his mother jocne years later.
Mr. Hay had been a resident of
Central Point for 38 years, and had
acquired marly friends, who will be
saddened to learn of hla passing.
Mary Ryder waa united In marriage
to John Francis Hay at Grants Pass,
December 11, 1891, they made tneir
home In Grants Pass for three years,
then moving to Fort Jones. Calif.,
where they have resided continuously
since that-time.
Two daughtera were born to this
union, Mra. Eleanor. Ames of Wenat
chee. Washington, and M!m Ar'.ene
Hay of Central Point Hla widow,
Mrs. Mary Hay also survives, and two
grandchildren, Arlene fi Doris
Ames, and one brother. R. L. Hay of
Willow Springs district.
They also had one daughter, bro
Hay who passed away January 1, 1891.
aha being almost three years of age
at the time of her death.
Funeral services will be conducted
from the Perl Funeral home Friday
at 2:00 p. m. Rev. D. E. Millard of
ficiating. Central Point I. O. p. F.
lodge No. 193. of which he had been a
member for 25 years, will have charge
of services at the graveside In the
Central Point cemetery. '
COUNTY TO SELL
TAX PROPERTIES
Arrangements have been made by
the county tax department for the
disposition of all tax property In or
der tbat It might be placed on the
tax roll again. An agreement has
been made with H. D. Fearey and
Dan Hearing, contractors, for compil
ing the data In connection with the
property valued between $500,000 and
600,000.
The property, composed of between
450 and BOO pieces, la timber, farm
ing land, mining properties and city
lots. ' The sale of the tracts Is now
being carried on by Mr. Fearey and
Mr. Herring.
The sale of this land In the county
will enable many to obtain homes
who would otherwise not have the
opportunity, It was pointed out, and
many new home owners are expected
to come to the valley now that this
property Is being presented ,for public
ownership.

K. Weeks, a Brooklyn undertaker, was j
held today on a charge of homicide t
In connection with the death of hla

had admitted tying a strip of gauze
tightly about her neck.
Officiate said Weeks told them
after long questioning that the young
woman, Mrs. Caroline Weeks, collaps
ed in her apartment while he was
there and, fearing suspicion might
fall on him If aie died, he knotted
the gauze about her neck to make it
look like suicide.
Suspicion was first caused by the
fact that there were two knote in
the gauze whereas lnvestlgtors were
convinced that if the woman had been
taking her own life she would have
rendered herself unconscious before
she could have tied the second knot.

PORTLAND. Aug. 24. (AP) In
one of the largest transactions of the
year, involving the transfer of trus
teeship of millions of dollars In real
and personal property, the Portland.
Trust and Savlnga bank last night
announced the purchase of the trust
business formerly handled by the
Commonwealth Title & Trust com
pany. . !

Recreation Club
Meeting Tonight
The Jackson County Recreation
club will meet this evening at the
Central Point Orange hall for an Im
portant session, Mrs. Mabel Mack,
home demonstration agent, announced
this morning. The meeting will be
the last preceding the training school,
for which plans will be outlined and
a large attendance Is desired.
Inmate Escapes
SALEM. Aug. 24. (AP) State po
lice today were looking for Oenleve
Hlnshaw, 23. who escaped from the
state hospital early today. Hospital
officials reported possible help from
the outside as she mado her get-away
from the third floor.
Cut Bus Fares
SALEM. Aug. 24. (AP) A pre-war
price level of five cents a ride on city
bus lines went into effect here to
day. The Oregon Motor Stages com
pany launched a 80 day experiment
to ascertain if Increased business
