step forward. What it will do for
Joel McCrea, featured with Dolores

JACKSONVILLE, Aug. IB. (Spl.)
Mrs. Ell Hartley Bush, one of the
valley'i best known pioneers, paused
In Jacksnovllle recently for a chat
with some of her many friends.
She expressed Xeen Interest In the
coming "Gold Rush Jubilee" and un-
blushinglv confessed that there was
an undying love In her heart for the
old town and cherished memories of
Its romantic past. She suggested, too,
that those who attend the old-time
dance, to be given In connection with
the event, rig themselves up In the
outlandish costumes that were worn
In the good old days.
That's a brilliant Idea. And why
not? Come on, you boys and girls
of yesterday I Let's do It!
What fun It Will ow rummaging
tn the old oaken chest and through
the almost forgotten bureau draw
ers) Girls! Dig up the old polonaise
and the waterfalls and basques, and
the old red petticoat and the hoop
skirts. And even the pantalettes may
not come amiss.
Do your hair up In Jugs with
switches and rats, and beau-catchers
and ringlets, If any, and decorate It
with barrettes or one of those an
cient two-story combs. And by all
means, don't forget these cunning
little patches of black court plaster
on your cheeks.
Make Dad resurrect the shiny stove
pipe hat and don the swallow tailed
broadcloth and the fancy white vest.
Then swing onto his irrm and step
out Just as you did that other night
so long ago w.hen Old Dobbin plodded
slowly down the lane, and your lover,
skilfully guiding him with one hand,
whispered softly in your ear the
sweetst story ever told.
What memories will flood your
heart I And maybe well, maybe Dad
will whisper again those same sweet
words.

HOLLYWOOD. To see the long
awaited "Bird of Paradise" la to be
pleasantly reminded of the days when
moving pictures and action meant
something more than Up movement.
King vldor's new production cost,
according to conservative estimate,
about 700.000, no small Item in
these times, because box offices sel
dom return that much on pictures
any more. But studio people are op
timistic that It will eventually "pay
out."
The hope springs from the fact
that the picture, although It has
dialog. Is essentially "silent" In Its
technique. It therefore can be
shown anywhere, the dialog being
incidental If helpful, but not neces
sary to apprecitlon. That will take
care of the foreign market, which
may take care of the costs.
Significant in "Bird of Paradise"
are the beauty of photographic ef

actually helps to tell the story, en
chanting, dramatic effects and build
ing up climaxes Just as symphony
orchestras used to do with big silent
films and, above all the rapid ac

though the stage play on which It la
based la mossy and bearded. And
most Interesting, from the enjoy
ment stand plont. It leaves free play
to audience Imagination, a thing no
tably few talkies do.

PARA, Brazil. (VP) Large scale
rubber production by the Ford plan
tations will mark an Important step
in Amazonian Brazil's development,
said Major Magalhaea Barata, federal
lnterventor for the state of Para,
when he returned here from an In
spection trip.
Such production probably will not
begin for six years, he said, as rub
ber trees require eight years to reach
production. The Ford concession
was granted in 1927, but the state
administrator said that previous gov
ernors had hindered operations.
Major Magahaes Barata believes
strongly In foreign concessions tor
equatorial Brazil. He cited the sev

Fordlandla, as advantageous to the
state. The Japanese grow rice, fruits,
vegetables, tobacco and sugar.
Both Ford and Japanese conces
sions have built railroads, the Amer
ican line being four miles long.
