a yellow pigskin bag with a zipper
top had been stolen from the side of

appendix, is continuing to improve,

munity hospital, where he Is conva
lescing. He was feeling much better

Minor Accident Robert Gale of
1106 West Tenth street reported to
the city police that his car had fig
ured in a minor collision at 5:30
o'clock last evening at the corner of
Laurel and Main. L. Shean was list

William McClain of San Francisco,
who has been making his home In
Medford temporarily, is having his
stay here extended thirty days. He
was sentenced to the county jail for
that length of time yesterday afer
noon by Justice H. D. Reed of Gold
Hill, and fined 1&0, on liquor
charges.
McClain was arrested early Wed
nesday morning by Federal Prohibi
tion Investigator C. A. Herr on the
chaiges of transportation and poss
ession of liquor. One gallon of liquor
was found In the Hudson coach Mc
Clain was driving, according to Offic
er Herr.
The arrest was made on Jackson
street.
A character (ration contest will be
featured at the meeting tomorrow
evening of the Central Point Orange.
The program will be in charge of Mrs.
J. Sanford Richardson and a prize
will be awarded the person who pre
sents the best Impersonation of I
character In history, beginning with
the time of Moses. About 15 entries

Contestants who qualify In this
local audition will be In line for ad
vancement, through state and district

tional audition finals, the winners

totaling $15,000. Individual awards
to the five young men and five young
women who progress to the finals
will be: 5.000 each to the young
man and young woman rated high
est; $1,000 each to second place win

woman; 500 each to the six runners

SHIPPED SO FAR
The first picking of Bartletts In the
Rogue River valley has practically
been completed In most of the or
chards of the district, and the second
picking will start next week. Pick
ing of the Howell crop, estimated at
between 75 and 100 cars, is also sched
uled to start next week.
The Southern Pacific reports that
up to Wednesday night, 101 cars had
own shipped east.
Shippers report the eastern market
"continuing to show . improvement,
but still nothing to rave about."
In many of the orcharda of the
valley picking has been discontinued
until next week. The Del Rio, In the
northern part of the valley Is one
of these.
Some of the Bartletts have been
shipped to New York City, with in
structions to sell if the market Justi
fies, otherwise to place in cold stor
age. Some of the crop Is held In cold
storage here.
It is expected that the market will
Improve the final days of August.

Hock market see-sawed uneasily to
day, coming up to finish with mod
erate gains in some leaders, in sym
pathy wlt,h a late upturn In the
wheat market.
It was one of the most quiet ses
sions of the month, with a turnover
of about one and three-quarter mil
lion shares. Leaders appeared to en
counter support on recessions. After
noon losses of ! to 13 a share In
several lssurs were largely ernsed In
the last hour, and several leaders
closed II to $3 above yesterday's final
levels.
