Jack Dempaey, on the come-back
trail of the fight world, stopped in
Medford yesterday afternoon with hts
manager Leonard Sucks and party, for
lunoh at Valentine's cafe. The group
was In the city only a short time, ar
riving here at three o'clock. They
were en route to S&n Francisco.
This morning, Dempaey spoke to the
convicts at the state penitentiary
where he was greeted with a great

their scheduled four round match.
Sawyer Is familiar to local fight fans,
having appeared on Mack Ullard's

Facing defeat with barely 100 me-,
ters to go, the American collegians
responded with a remarkable closing
spurt that was just enough to send
the prow of tiielr boat first across
the finish line.
The official times were 6 minutes,
37 3-5 seconds for the United States,
6:37 4-5 for Italy.
Almost unnoticed In the terrific
din of excitement, even though they
were close enough to make It a"blank
et" finish, Canada's leanders and the
Cambridge university crew of Great
Britain finished third and fourth in
a battle that was almost as sensa
tional as that between the first two
boats.
Keeping their own unbeaten record
for 1033 Intact, thereby duplicating
the triumph of their California pre
decessors in 1028, and likewise main
taining the unbroken string of Amer
ican triumphs In Olympic eight-oared
competition, the great Oolden Bear
boat load also clinched the Olympic
rowing championship for the United
States with the winning total of 38
points for the regatta.
Great Britain, with two champlon

Popularity Prize
In Lions9 Contest
At the clone of the counting of
tickets for the p-cond week in the
Lions club popularity contest at the
Fox Craterlan last night. Miss Ruby
Stone was named winner of the sec
ond week's prize, an electric boudoir
clock, given by Palmer's electric store
Miss Marjorla Marshall, winner last
week, was also introduced on the
stage. Members of the Lions' club
announced that all contestants are
working hard for the grand prise, an
aeroplane trip to Hollywood. The
competition will close the last of the
month.
Announcement that the Bootery win
furnish shoes to go with the ensemble
being presented the winner of the
trip was made by the committee.
The first patent granted on the
American cont lnent was issued to
Samuel Wlnslow by the general court

Spurring plana for a national confer
ence of business leaders at the White
House, Piesldent Hoover today turn
ed his back upon the purely political
affairs that have occupied him for
much of the last week.
The chief executive called In Roy
D. Chapln, recently recruited from
the automobile Industry for the sec
retary of commerce post, for a lengthy
conference on plans for the economic
parley aimed at a co-ordination or
the forces of government and business
"for united and concerted action on
a broad front throughout the coun
try." Chapln was reticent about detailed
plans for the conference, the exact
date for which will be announced ny
Mr. Hoover Monday.
"I can only say," Chapln added.
"that the president has a very defi
nite and very fine plan, speaking as
a business man, and I think the busi
ness men of the country are going to
like It.

AWAITS RETURN
OF COUNSEL!
Deferment of final decision In the
cases of Victor Ooble, Oris Goble, and
Kirch Pelle. Trail youths, charged
with larceny of stock from the range
was ordered Saturday morning by
Circuit Judgs H. D. Norton, until
such tlm, as Attorney Charles W.
Reames. counsel for the Ooble broth
ers, returns from his ' annual vaca
tion. Attorney Reames Is expected to
return the coming week.
As further reason for delay, the
court will occupy the Douglas county
bench at Roseburg In hearing case
most of the present week.
The case of Oris Ooble. 17, a minor,
was ordered transferred to the Ju
venile court.
Attorney Harry Skyrmaa Informed
the court that Attorney Reames
would return to the city Wednesday.
Attorney Don Newbury, counsel for
Pelle agreed to the postponement.
The court stated from the bench,
"that this Is a case of considerable
seriousness, both to the public, and
the defendants," and "warned the
parents snd friends of the accused
to try not to talk to court about it."
The court declared "both sides would
have a chance In open court to make
statements."
The courtroom was comfortably
filled with friends and relatives of the
three defendants, and the usual curi
ous spectators.
Pelle and the Ooble brothers, fol
lowing their arrest last week, made
detailed statements to the stats po
lice and sheriff's office, confessing
the theft, slaughter, and sale of the
stock. Tyrua Bock, 19, of this city,
will enter a plea of not guilty, and
his case will come to the attention of
the next grand Jury session. The stol
en stock belonged to Arthur Kent.

men of the Trail and Antelope dis
tricts.
Cramps Drown Swimmer. '

Having spent Saturday at Crater
Lake, Mr. and Mrs. 6. O. Harris of
Tarrytown, N. Y, Miss Clara Smith
and Miss E. P. Copeland of Norfolk,
Conn., left last evening by train for
Grants Pass, to Journey to California,
via the Redwoods highway.
Mr. and Mrs. Harris are on a three
months' trip that took them through
the Yukon country of Alaska, and to
Seward, before continuing aouth to
Mt. Rainier, Mt. McKlnley and Crater
Lake National parks. Their Itinerary
calls for visits to six more national
parks before returning to New York
the middle of September.
