PORTLAND. Ore., Aug. 12. (AP)
Dr. George Frederick Zook, president
of Akron (Ohio) university. In line
for position of chancellor of Oregon's
system of higher education, has
studied the Oregon system and Its
proposed changes, but - he will not
comment upon it publicly.
This statement was made by the
Ohio educator here today as he ar
rived for a conference with members
of the Btate board of higher educa
tion. He will visit tbe several cam
puses before leaving or tfie middle
west next Monday.
No fcormal Offer Made
Dr. Zook was asked by the board
to visit Oregon with the view of be
coming chancellor of higher educa
tion. He said today he has never
been formally offered the office and
therefore has never been in a posi
tion to accept or decline It. He has
been Invited to look Into the Oregon
situation, he said; Is not a candidate,
and is "perfectly happy" where he is
now located at Akron. Nevertheless,
the board considers him In a receptive
mood.
The Ohioan, who was In La Grande
yesterday, was accompanied to Fort
land by E. C. Pease, board member
of The Dalles. He conferred with
Mrs. Cornelia Marvin Pierce, La
Grande board member, at that city
yesterday.
Tendency to Co-ordinate
There Is, Dr. Zook said In com
menting on the Oregon situation and,
the school consolidation bill, a gen
eral throughout the country to co
ordinate the work of schools of high
er education. He said he has studied
the Oregon system and the proposed
changes but he prefers to carry dis
cussions to members of the board
rather than to the public.
It Is apparent," he said, "that
throughout the land there la a tend
ency toward some form of co-ordination.
No two states are going at
the task alike and there Is no reason
why they should."

Mrs. Sam McNalr Is chairman of
the Ashlimd Unit of the Women's
division, Mrs. Reames also stated to
day she was pleased to announce, and
the entire organization Is moving
steadily forward.
Ashland has had much experience
In food conservation work, having op
erated the publto canning kitchen
and a soup kitchen last year. The'
campaign of this . year la therefore;

Ashland will also cooperate with
the county movement by setting
aside a certain amount of canned
products, to be added to the, county ,
commissary supply, and will partlcl- j
pate In the collection and distrlbut- i
tlon of clothing to supply the needs
of the coming winter.

from Ashland yesterday, Mrs. Reames J
stated, which will be of value to all
group working In the food conser
vation program.
Through a typographical error in
yesterday's Mall Tribune the impres
sion was given that Miss Clsrlbell
Nvt had advised the buying of Jars
and other containers In the county I
conservation program when drying!

have read: "Miss Nye urged that the
attention of every individual in Jack
son county be directed to the duty
of permitting no foodstuff to go to
waste, and suggests that drying ba

the years, is very economical, and
makes possible many delicious foods,

from the winter menu.
