LOS ANGELES, Aug. lb. p) The
aquatic world was forewarned today
that Japan plans to lend a distinct
Oriental hue to the closing episodes
of the tenth Olympiad swimming
championships.
Fortified with three sturdy per
formers In each of the three remain
ing races on the program, these sons
erf Nippon held the upper hand over
the remainder of the field, including
Uncle Sam's best, and It was quite
evident thai unless an upset of the
most profound order was in prospect,
the team title was due tp leave Amer
ican hands.
May Take Lead Today.
With the only men's final on to
day's program, and the United States
holding a five-point team lead, there
wa strong possibility that Japan
night assume first place before sun
down. Mearrwhlle, America's mermaids
dominated. Eleanor Holm won the
100-meter backstroke crown yester
day from Bonnie Mealing, Australia,
In 1 minute 10.4 seconds, 1.1 seconds
slower than her own Olympic record
set In the semi-finals. As a result,
the feminine team lead mounted to
51 against 17 for Australia.
Hnngary Polo 1st Unbeaten.
Hungary's great water polo team
maintained Its undefeated record by
trouncing the United states, 7 to 0.
The Yankees had gone undefeated
before, although Germtny, 1038

victory virtually assured Hungary the

finals for men, Olymplo titles to be
decided today included the women's
high platform diving, and the wom

United States was favored to win.

IS THREATENED BY
(By the Associated Press)
Hollywood's Stars batted themselves
to within two games of the first
place Portland club Thursday night
by hammering the Seattle Indians
Into submission, 13 to 6. Cleo Car-
lyle, oenter fielder, led the Hollywood
attack, getting five Jilts In five times
up. Jim Turner, Star hurler, con
tributed three of his team's 18 safe
ties, one of them a homer. The In
dians got 13 hits, but were not as
successful in turning them Into
scores.
Part of the Portland Beavers lead
slipped away from them as Ban Fran
cisco won the third straight of the
series, 4 to 3. Davis allowed the
Ducks only six hits. The Seals were
held to seven safeties, but bunched
ttiem more effectively. Art Garibaldi,
second baseman, brought home, three
of the runs by timely hitting.
Bert cole of the Missions and Leftv
Vlncl, Sacramento hurler, put on a
beautiful nlne-lnnlng duel, with the'
Senators winning out In the final
frame, 1 to 0. The winning run was
made as result of Cole's fumble
of an easy fielding chance.

FOR WESTERN CUP
Pair Will Give Added Interest

Rockford, III., Country

By Paul Mlckelson

ROCKFORD, HI, Aug. 13. (API-
Two old "war horses" of the fairways.
H. Chandler Euan and Charles 'Chick
Evans, will give the 1933 Western
smsteur golf championship a thrill
when the white pelleta start flying
over the Rockford Country club
course August 33.
These two veterans, who have worn
the western crown 13 times between
them over the past 30 years, will bat
tle for It again this year, pitting their
recovered skill and experience against
approximately 140 products of golf
dom's younger generation led by the
defending champion, Don Moe of
Portland, Ore.
Egan N'ow 4A
Egan, now In his 48th year, but
back on the strong game that brought
him the western title In 1003, '04, '06
and '07 and the National amateur
championship In 1904 and '06 Isn't
regarded as a sot-up by any means
by his youthful rivals.
The veteran of a thousand match
es flashed his first comeback In 1939
by aweeplng to the seml-Unals of the
National and recaptured the Pacific
northwest cro-vji this yesr.
Evsns, golf's most notorious vlc
tlmb of glased putts. Is far from the
shotmnker that swept to western
titles eight times between 1909 and
'33, but word has spread that he has
been playing his best golf in five
years.
Boys Also Good
But the "old timers" will have a
struggle on their hands from the
quellfylng round of 38 holes to the
final championship putt.
Moe will be back and so will the
1930 champion, Johnny Lehman of
Chicago; Charlie Beavers, Los An
geles star; Jack Westland, Chicago,
finalist in the 1931 National ama
teur, and possibly Harrison "Jimmy"
Johnston, another national cham
pion of yesterday, from St. Paul.
Walker Cup Conflict
Because of the fact that the Walker
Cup matches are slated for Brook
line, Mass., beginning September 1,
many other stars, Including the Eng
lish toam members, will be missing
from .the tournament picture. How
ever, several western stars may come
In as late entries.
Por the "straight and narrow," shot
makers, the championship Rockford
course doesn't hold any terrors. It
Isn't so very long and the greens are
fair. It Is well trapped, the fairways
are laid out to penalize bad ahots
and three holes border a river. Par

I'm going In for golf J- ble
