nix Orsnge met Tuesday night with
attendance of about 40 members.
The officers chairs were filled by
the officers of the Talent Orsnge,
and the work wss very effectively
given.
Lecture hour, conducted by Mrs.
Gardner, lecturer of the Talent
Orange, consisted of songs, musle,
readings and a short play depicting
school days many years ago.
At the cloae of the program, Ray
Gill of Portland, master of 'Xe

on matters of Importance to sll

Dr. John C. Merriam. Washington,
D. C, president of the Carnegie In
stitution, was a visitor this week,
devoting time to plans whereby park
visitors msy gain greatest apprecia
tion of scenic values and geologlo
history of Crater Lake. To make such
appreciation possible, Dr. Merriam
has given carelul thought to the In
stallation of exhibits and equipment
in tne Binnott memorial observation
station and museum on Victor Rock
near the lodge.
In speaktng of national parks, as a
w,hole, Dr. Merriam set forth the
American people are becoming more
Interested In scenic wonders so set
sslde lor the sole enjoyment ol the
public. Through observation, he has
lesrned visitors are not content with,
visits confined only to viewing seen
ery, but are anxious to gain complete
knowledge of what they are viewing.
With that thought In mind, he has
taken active Interest In the Installa
tion of equipment whereby Crater
Lake visitors, entirely through their
own eriorta and observations, are en
abled to gain a complete story of the
lake, resting In what was the caldera
ot an ancient volcano, active many
thousands of years ago. Binoculars,
trained on Important rtm views, have
been In use for the past season, sup
plemented by a series of exhibit boxes
containing Interesting volcanlo sped
mens. The museum Is to lnolude ex
hibit dealing with the past and
present of Crater Lake.
Dr. Merriam carried on similar ac
tivities In Orand Canyon park and
has spent considerable time and ef
forts In Yosemlte park.

CRATER LAKH NATIONAL PARK.

so far this season have been held to
a remarkable minimum, reported J.
D. Coffman, fire control expert ot the
park service when a visitor at Crater
lake this week, making his annual In
spection of fire prevention measures
taken In the park. The largest fire
reported wss confined to an area of
89 acres and was located In the Ha
waii national park.
Following a visit to the fire look
out station. located on the summit
of The Watchman," flrat high point
on the northwest rim of Crster lake,
he regarded the structure a, the best
lookout house In the park system In
view of Its dual purpose ot fire pre
vention and serving observation sta
tion for visitors. The station Is lo
cated at an altitude of 8099 feet and
to reach It, a walk of lees than 18
minutes from the Mm road up a wide

(Spl.) Adding to the attractiveness
ot the rim area ot Crater lake, land
eeapers have been engaged the past
summer plsntlng native grasses and
shrubs between the rim promenade
and road. The landscaping begins a
short distance west of the crater wall,
trail and Is to extend to the lodge.
As a further Improvement, log guard
rails along the rim are to be replaced
this season with stone curbing.
