A THOUSAND DEVILS
THE three stared at Jerry as
though he bad lost his mind.
He lifted loose sand through bis
fingers, not looking up.
"Of course," be continued slow
ly," "you understand that the mar
riage would be In name only. It

could all work together and have
It quietly annulled. Steve and
Emory would be witnesses to
prove that It had been done as the
lesser of two evils."
A thousand devils were grinning
from Emory's dancing eyes as he
glanced from the sober-faced,
flushed Nancy to the embarrassed
Jerry.
"Fine scheme, It you ask me,"
Stevens said hastily. "You prob
ably won't have to worry about a
divorce, or an annulment, either,
because If you aren't a widow by
the time you leave here, it won't
be Jerry's fault. He's more anx
ious to go and get himself killed

Jerry's ears burned as he saw

A small hand suddenly rested
upon his knee. Ha looked up to
see Nancy smiling at him through
tear-washed eyes.

I trust you," ahe said, simply. "I'll
leave all the dotalls to you three."
She rose and walkod rapidly to
ward the house. Emory broke Into
a chuckle. Jerry glared at him.
"What are you laughing at, you
ap? I've got a good mind to poke

"I'm laughing out of pure relief,"
gasped Emory, "that I wasn't the
falr-halred laddie who thought of
that wonderful scheme! Ob boyl

The detective's eyes were twin
kling, but his face was Impassive.

"1 heard you ray it," gibed
Emory, "but It didn't mean any
thing. You wait."
"It's J'ist because I have a won
derful control over my tompor,"
observed Jorry wltherlngly, "that
I don't beat you up. I'd do It right

He rose and strode toward the
house, very much on his dignity.
The majestic hajteir of his re
treat was not made easier by the
sound ot Emory's raucous laughter
which followed him all the way to
the porch ateps.
