"Who killed Williams and the
guard?" asked Jerry, bis mind busy

"I wish I knew. Might be almost
anyone. I guoBs Llmpy's rlgl t In
blaming It on one ot the prisoners,
It's easy to guess, ot course, that It
would be Mailory or Luccl.. Mai
lory's halt off bl conk now. Luccl
would Just as soon knock off on
otber man as craor a peanut But
I'm not sure. Williams was a barm
less little siuld and hadn't been
arguing with either ot them. That
leaves only tne three ot us, Hamil
ton and Martin. You boys didn't
do It, did you?"
Jerry and Zpory stared at blm
Incredulously, but the old blue eyes
were serious.
"Well, of course I realty didn't
think you die," he hastened to In
form them. "But It doesn't seem
a likely thing for anybody to do and

"I've bad about enough of It,
declared Jerry, a reckless glear. In
bis gray eyes. "You fellows keep
your eye on me and when 1 start
something, bn ready to Jump right
, into the middle of It I haven
' been In a good, old-fajnloned
KnocK-aown-ana-arng-out oar-room
brawl for so long that I'm beginning
to crave action."
"Wish Id brought along a couple
ot older men," complained fjtovons
plaintively. "It's all right to fight
when there Isn't any other war to
. get out of trouble. But the older
. you get, the more peaceable you
. become. You Just Jump a second
too soon or & second too late, young
man, and that Llmpy will empty

reach blm."
Jerry's face bore a stubbo t ex
presslon which the dotectlve'
' words failed to erase. The flyor
was fed up with Inaction and was
; determined tc force things to
- conclusion. The sooner the better,
Emory, a wide smile on his reck
less face, cared little what hap
pened as long as something hap
pened soon. Ho was enjoylni every
; minute of his stay on the Island.
Not since the armistice bad his
cerves tingled with sucb pleasura
ble anticipation of Impending ac
tion as they did here, whore every

, ment would make the experience
delightful one. Emory's only con
' iclous dread was ot the days,
months and years of prob&bl bore
dom to come when this adventure
- bad reached whatever conclusion
was destined 'or 1L
"Look." exclaimed Stevens. "Hore
comes Miss Wentworth. In a hurry,
too.
The girl wa approaching through
' the scrub, her face pale and drawn
with emotion.
. "Oh, Mr. Calhoun," sbe gasped
"I must get off this Island this morn-tag!"
What's the matter?" deuia .(led
Jerry and Emory at the same mo
ment Sbe bad not been s over
wrought and neivous during those
horrible few minutes after Wil
liams' murder.
'Ashwood Is maklug me marry
him. That plane has gone after a
minister."
The three men stared at her In
amazement. Jerry, bis race sudden
ly pale, rose quick!.- to bis feet and
turned toward the bouse.
Come on, you fellows," ha said.
uletly, "Here's where the lid
blows out."
Emory, smiling contentedly, rose
and started after his friend, Ste
vens sat still, watching them Quit
zlcally.
"Where you fellers going?" be
called.
Jerry stoppr- In mid stride.
"The houseparty'a going to break
up now, be snappeu. I'm going to
take Ashwood apart to see what
makes him tick."
And what are the guards going
to be doing?" asked tbe detective
curiously.
"Are you coming?" demanded
Jerry shortly.
"Ub, bub. In Just a minute. It
you'll sit down and plsn things a
little bit first 1 never was one to
rush right Into trouble. Come on,
sit down. Five-ten minutes Isn't
going to mak or break anything."
Jerry and Emory hesitated. Their
fighting b!oo was at tbe boiling
point and loglo was not what they
wanted.
Sit down, will yon?" The de
tective's voice was petulanU "Do
you want to do tbe best thing for
Miss Wentworth or do you Just
want to fight"
They sat town. Emory looked
decidedly sulky.
All right," said Stevens. "Now.
Miss Wentworth, you sit down, too,
and tell us all about It We'll get
things fixed up somehow. If we
have to fight, 1 reckon we can do a
pretty good Job. If a little ternlg
gellng around will settle things,
we'll do that But tell us what It's
all about"
She glanced at him gratefully
and sank to the ground. Ills quiet,
kindly vol e Impressed her with
confidence. Hesitantly, laconically.
she told theai of Ashwood's plans
for her abduction.
Phew I" Emory whistled, at the
conclusion ot her story "The little
guy has nerve enough, I'll band him
tbat"
Jerry baa fought down bis Im
pulse for swift decisive action.
"How about a marriage license?"
be asked.
"He didn't mention that," replied
the girl simply.
"The flyer might be able to get
one wherever they're going after
the minister," hazarded tbe old
man.
"1. wondor," ventured Jerry,' hes
tantly, "wuother he would have
(threatened to carry you away If jpa
had been married already."
"No tell I n0," said Steven posi
tively. "You can't guess the way
that feller's mind will turn. It's a
atty-flfty hot"
"1 don't believe be would take a
married woman off," stated Emory,
"That bird has a code ot morals all
his own."
"Well, I'm not married," sbe said
flatly, "so there's no use guessing
about It"
"It might be worth taking a
chance on," obsorred Jerry, a spot
ot red on each cheek-bone. She
loked at aln, not understanding,
"When Is this marriage business
going to be pulled off?"
"Tonight or tomorrow morning,
I think." Her voice was discour
aged. "Aab'vcod plans to leave
here tomorrow."
"What?" demanded all three men
at once.
"Yes, didn't you know? He cays
we can be at his yacht by tomorrow
evening."
"Looks like we stand reauy to
lose our share ot the reward,"
mourned Savons. "Unless some
thing happens tonight there doesn't
seem much chance for us to claim
the roscuo ot the kidnaped folks.
Wo can't very well collect on them
it Llmpy turns them loose of his
own accord. I Just knew I wasn't
going to got that pecan grove so
easy I"
Emory laughed and slapped tbe
old man on the back. But Jerry
bad not been listening. Whej be
spoke his face was red.
"If we can get a chance to work
on the nilnsto. first, he might marry
you to someone else to me, for
Instance," be added desperately.
