BOYS RELINQUISH
SLINGSHOTS AFTER
HUMANE LECTURE
Mrs. Sidney Richardson of the
Jackson County Humane society Is
not going out for slingshot practice,
but she does have severs! sllngshorts,
she announced this afternoon at the
Mail Tribune, coming In to tell how
she acquired the hand-made weapons
and to voice her appreciation of a
group of boys In the south side of
town, who hare decided that killing
birds Is not good sport.
In responss to numerous com
plaints of birds being killed by sling
shots near Dakota street, Mra. Rlch-
srdson started on an Investigation
tour this morning. She visited sev
eral homes In the neighborhood and
located many slingshots, which the
owners admitted had been used for
"popping off birds."
After talking with parents and
boys, she found all were ready to
cooperate with her in enforcing the
law wnicn forbids killing of birds
without written permission from the
game wsrden.
She gathered up the slingshots and
started away with them, then con
ceived the Idea of leaving them with
the boys, to be used at target prac
tice. The idea was presented and
the slingshots returned to their own
ers. Just as Mrs. Richardson entered
her oar and started from the neigh
borhood, however, she was stopped
by the group of boys, with Lloyd
Colbaugh as spokesman. They an
nounced that they preferred to give
up the slingshots, ,'eellng that If they
kept them they would probably yield
to temptation the next time a bird
perched upon a limb within range.
So Mrs. Richardson has the sllng
shota. In the group with Lloyd Colbaugh
were Dick Finch. Billy Thorndlke.
Jack Woods and brother, and David
and John Balrd.
The game law concerning birds,
Mrs. Richardson further stated to
day, clearly sets forth that Indi
vidual are prohibited from killing
aU types of birds, with the excep
tion of those damaging property. The
latter can , be killed lawfully only
when written permission has been
outlined from the state game war.
