BORAH REMAINS
TO LIVEN DOLL
Fact Thai Congress Over
Means Little to Fiery
Idahoan Dally Press
Talks Meat tor Scribes
By HERBERT FLUMMER.
WASHINGTON All signs of activ
ity on capltol hill disappeared quickly
within the first three dsys after con
gress finally decided to adjourn. t
Senatora and representatives, tired
out after almost eight months of
what has been msrked down as one
the meet gruelling sessions of
congress In history, made a hasty exit
to their homes to begin the belated
and neglected Job of mending their
political fences.
But for one senator at least the
fact that congress waa over meant
very little. Borah of Idaho remained
on the Job. There waa no let-up as
fnr aa he was concerned.
At aome houn-durlng the day, every
ay, the telephone bell In the senate
presa gallery la heard. It la Borah's
office.
"Borah's ready," Willie Collins, su
perintendent of the gallery, calls to
he newspapermen sitting around.
He says come on down.".
And down they go to attend ma
dally press conference about the
only Individual conference of Its kind
regularly held on the hill.
Private Press Meets.
Borah's press conferences have come
to be regarded much as an Institution
around the cepltof. They have been
going on for a long time and are
attended religiously by those news
papermen assigned to the eenate.
There I only one other held a regu
larly at the capltol. When Speaker
darner la In town, or during sessions
of congress, he has a standing- en
gagement with newspapermen every
morning about 18 minutes before the
house meete. Then he answers their
questions and make any announce
ment that he ha. .
But there'a a difference between
thla and Borah' gathering. Gsmer
I apeaker of the house In his own
word th holder of the most power
ful Job In the United State except
that of President.
Borah la Juat an Individual eena-
tor. True, he la chairman of in
Important committee on foreign rela
tione, but that In itself is naraiy ef
ficient excuse to warrant dally formal
meetings with the press.
Of course the reason 1 tnat ne im
Borah.
Re I "Good Copy.
If an axiom around Washington
that Borah' opinion on anything I
good copy. Let him arise In the een
ate and begin discussing any subject
and the press gallery goes Into action.
For example, hi more or less cas
ual reference to a third party, jusi
nrlor to the two political conventions,
set th whole country to speculating
a to what he meant.
And hi now farnou retort to Jim
Ham" Lewi anent the proniouion
plank In the Republican partya plat
form, and hi future course toward
President Hoover In the coming cam
paign ha got 'em tlll wondering.
Whenever Boran winit to uw
publication even though he may oe

hear him and make a record of wha
he says.
