STEVENS was chewing quietly,
his eyes gazing off Into a far
corner. His two companions waited
tor him to speak.
At last the silence became some
what oppressive. Ashwood's slen

"Llmpy," he murmured nnexpect

and I like you. But so long as I

"Porry; fellows," he shrugged, ris

"Don't know as I blame -on. Still,

Jerry. "Captain Calhoun, roi are

He smiled Inscrutably as they
followed the steward from the room.
"Well, I never Invested 125,000 to
better advantage In my Ufa than
when I bought that monoplane," de
clared Emory enthusiastically, as
the steward closed tbe door behind
him. He looked at the other two
with gleaming eyes. "I wanted ad

gentlemen. Is Just what my doctor

"Ub, huh," agreed Stevena clum

you'll have a lot of trouble digesting
them."
"How did they capture you!"
asked Jerry curiously.
"They Jut, looked down vd saw
our plane sitting there on the beach.
Then they dived and cut circles In
tbe Band around us with a nathlne
gun until it would have been silly
not to stick up our hands." Tbe
detective was clearly dejected.
Whatever there might be of adven

"That sounds like sense," nodded
Stevens, standing at the window and
watching a man who bugged the
shade of a palm and every nov and
then shifted his heavy holster to a
more comfortable position.
"My dear Miss Wentworth,"
sighed Ashwood, "If you were only
able to acquire a proper perspec
tive, you would find yourself thor
oughly enjoying your stay with ns.
You arc, I am told, a remarkable
actress. Just think of the roles you
will be able to create wben you un
derstand the pathologic psychology
of your fe.lcff guests."
A faint breeze from the Gulf ol
Mexico caressed Nancy's pink cheek
as she lay back In her deck chair
indolently watching the soft tropic
nlgbt Ash vood's Idle speiuatlons,
brilliant but bltlngly cynlcil, in
trigued her.
"But I'm not a dramatic actress,
Mr. Ashwood," she protested. "It's
really a pit that you did not lnvitt
someone dovi here' who might glvi
mu singing and dancing lesson In
stead of studies In character."
He waved ber argument away.
"Hamilton, for Instance," he con
tinued, reflectively, "wbo, like a
drowning man wltb his proverbial
straw, clutches at his deck of cards
as a preserver of his sanity. Watch,
If you will, the expression in hla
eyes when he looks at Williams,
the Inoffensive grain broker from
Chicago. Strange, those two solid
business men should be so antago
nistic. Each seems so Innocuous
In his own way. But their brood
ing distaste for one another will
Sara up before long and the results
will be fascinating to an Impartial
observer.
'Regard the sullen enmity be
tween our fashionable amateur ath
lete Mallory, and the product of
Chicago speakeasies, the worthy
Luccl.
'Then, If you please, observe the
case of Martin, whose real love Is
Chicago real estate In neat little
subdivisions on the prairies west ot
Evansvtlle. He finds himself, now,
In love with you, but perplexed
because the heat seems to have
dried up the ebullient bubbling
springs ot. loquacity which are
every real estate promoter's birth
right He, too, thwarted In his
ambition to sell you the Idea ot
sottllng In Chicago, will soon break
out Into violence. It la interesting
to speculate as to the time and
method of his outbreak."
Nancy wondered what the three
newcomers were doing at this mo
ment Tbey had kept to them
selves all day, making no effort to
talk to her or to the other pris
oners. She had thought there
would be trouble when she bad
seen the queer old detective meet
Luccl near the dead line In front
of the hangar. Tbe gangster bad
clenched bis fists and bad halt
crouched as though to spring at the
older man. But Calhoun and Bat
tles had stepped forward to meet
his charge. There had been an In
stant's tense silence and Luccl
had turned away, his swarthy face
dark and lowering. Nancy bad
seen a look ot disappointment
sweep over the faces ot the two
comrades.
Her wild surge ot hope that the
trio would find speedy means to
rescue her had faded Into nothing
during the baking hours ot the
afternoon. After all, what could
they do, surrounded, as they were,
by a score ot armed guardsT She
hoped they would not -be precipi
tate. Ashwood had told ber that
Calhoun had been slightly Injured
In attempting to tntortere when she
had been kidnaped. Her heart
warmed to him, but she had had no
opportunity to express her grati
tude. Later, perhaps, the chancs
would come.
"And now," Ashwood's somnolenl
voice continued, "It becomes neces

tomorrow I am taking a step ol
some Importance. I observe a
slight fee'lng of restlessness amon
my men, here, so events are shap

"I have doclded to buy you back
from your ah fiance, and we will
leave the Island for good. Th
others will be released the next
day."
She sst bolt upright In her chair
wondering It she had understood.
"Buy met" she gasped.
