HYSOPalS: Jerry Calhoun, ieho
has been trailing Limpy Ah
wood's gang of kidnaper, arrive!
at Ashwood's Miami headquarters,
hoping to be believed a eaetawav.

Xancv Wentworth, abducted over
Jerry's dtfenss, and five men.
Chapter IT
HORNET'8 NEST
"I'VE been reading tba newspa-
para, Mr. but on haven't In
troduced yourself." said Jerry.
"How neglectful of me." apolo
gised the cripple, "I am called
Llmpy Asbwood."
"Sorry," Jerry ahook bla head
thoughtfully. "That doesn't mean
thing to me. But, as I atarted to
xplalo, I do read the newspapers
and I'm afraid that I've stumbled
Into a hornet's nest There are a
lot of people In this country who
would like to be Introduced to Miss
'Wentworth and One-shot Luccl,
right now."
"Then I'm sure you'll under
stand," murmured Ashwood suave
ly, "why you may as well settle
down to become a member In good
atandlng of our little bonseparty."
Jerry grinned ruefully and nod
ded. Then be patted his dripping
clothes suggestively.
"A thousand pardons!" ex
claimed the cripple. "Alfred, show
Mr. Feabody to bis room Instantly.
We'll complete the Introductions at
. your convenience."
The first oblique shaft of morn
lng sunlight snapped Jerry out of a
sound night's aleep. For a mo
ment be gazed In bewilderment
around the plain, comfortably fur
slshed room. Then, with a wide
grin of anticipatory excitement, be
leaped out of bed and strode to the
window. The Quit of Mexico was
an Infinitely vast lake of molten
liver, shimmering under the cloud
less sky. Another bot day wna In
dicated for not the slightest whis
per of wind rippled the surface of
the water, The palms leaned this
.way and that as though discour
aged and weary. Tneir leaves were
dry, browning at tba tips.
No wonder, thought Jerry, these
people were unstrung and ready to
leap for one another's throats at
the flicker of an eyelid. Never,
even during those last bectlo daya
at tba fiont when pilots came In
from patrol cursing at the tops of
tbelr voices, had he known such
nervous tension.
All evening, as tba "guests" had
sat about the living room he had
expected to witness a riotous out
break among tbe fidgeting, taut-
nerved men. Luccl and Mallory,
their puffed and bruised faces cov
ered with bandages, regarding each
other wtlb malevolent eyes, greedy
for an opportunity to finish the
struggle of the evening before.
Those two strange, sllont men,
Martin and Williams, gazing stead
taatly at Miss Wentforth with ex
pressions in tbelr sombre eyes
Which caused the flyer to watch
them more closely than he did the
ethers. Luccl and Mallory, what
ever tbey may have been before
oomlng to the Island, were now
lavages, knowing It and not car
ing. But what damage the heat
and the unnatural atmosphere of
the place bad done to Martin and
Williams was not so evident. They
would bear quiet watching.
That devil, Ashwood, had
lounged In hla chalsa longue, play
ing upon tbelr nerves as an organ
ist manipulates his banks of keys,
A dozen times during the bot, In
terminable evening, Jerry had
tensed bis muscles, expecting the
victims of the cripple's thrusts to
break Into a murderous frenzy and
run amuck. But always, at the
very laat Instant before an out
break, Ashwood would smooth the
other's ruffled nerves and turn his
attention to the next. Only two of
all those who had dwelt In that
hour tor many daya seemed un
moved by his verbal efforts to
arousa their anger. Hamilton, con
centrating upon bis everlasting
solitaire, answered the crlpple'i
quips carelessly, seeming to rogard
them as only slightly Irritating In
terruptions to the vastly mora 1m
portent business of placing one
card upon another. And Nancy
somehow came through the evening
unscathed. Ashwood's sallies In
ker direction did not cut to th
raw. They were kinder, perhaps.
At any rate; the girl held ber owr.
without great difficulty.
Jerry had not sought an oppor
tunity to explain his presence to
her. At dinner, be had surprised
tiirlvlti him ih.iifktf..n.
and, meeting her eye, hid seen her
shake her head ever sr. slightly,
'then look away, 80 he knew that
she recognized him and was warn
ing him to mane no sup uld
betray him.
It was with much regret that he
gave up hope of drawing ber aside
for a few moments conversation be
fore Emory and Stevens preclpl
tated a battle royal. She could
have told him how many guards
patrolled tbe beach, how many ma
chine guns could be expected to
open fire upon tbe airplane and
where, perhaps, would be tba most
likely place for blm to start a row
take tbe defenders' attention
away from tbe approaching mono-,
plane. 1
He knew, of a certainty, tbat the
extraordinary Ashwood did not be
lieve his Ingenuous story of being
cast away upon the neighboring
Island. .
He did not underestimate, In;
the least, the difficulties before
him. Ashwood would be warned
by bis suspicious visit and would
undoubtedly sea that his guards
did not relax their vigilance. This
Ashwood was no heavy-fluted mo
ron; he was Infinitely mora dan
gerous as an enemy.
Jerry knew that tbe most prac
tical plan would be to And soma
way to signal his friends to fly to
the nearest town and secure ade
quate assistance from tbe authori
ties. But, being young, reckless
and headstrong, he resolutely
pushed the conviction away.
Suddenly ho stiffened In alarm.
The familiar bark of a powerful
motor beat Into bis ears. Its
throbbing roar mounted ss It re
sponded to an advancing throttle
until the entire bouse aeemed to
vibrate. Then, dying down. It
popped and back-fired unevenly.
Jerry's first Impulse was to rush
to the porch to signal to the silver
winged monoplane. But after tbe
first Instant of Indecision, he real
ized that he was listening to Ash
wood's amphibian In ber hangar
at the inlet. He dressed hastily
and hurried out Into the fragrant
morning air just In time to see tbe
odd-shaped plane taxi slowly to the
channel and take off toward the
south. He stood on the porch, his
handa clenching the rail, watching
tbe amphibian's rising flight.
What a fool he bad been to un
derestimate Ashwood's shrewdness
and not to know that be would
make an effort to check up on bis
story! It tba amphibian continued
on ber present course for five min
utes ber crew could not fall to sea
the monoplane, whose bright wings
would loom up in the sand like an
air marker thoughtfully placed
there to draw attention to the spot.
The white-coated steward ap
peared at Jerry's side and bowed
civilly.
Mr, Ashwood's compliments,
sir, and will the gentleman kindly
Join him at breakfast?"
Jerry hesitated. He wished to
watch the course of the amphibian.
But the steward waited as though
he expected the summons to ba
obeyed immediately, ao the pilot
nodded reluctantly and entered tba
house.
In the long, dim dining room,
Ashwood awaited him, cool and Im
maculate In a suit of Chinese pon
gee. The large table, set with
places for two, was covered with
napery ot magnificent damask.
Good morning, Mr. ah Pea-
body," smiled the cripple. "It la
so good ot you to Join me. Our
other guests will presently have
their breakfasts in their rooms and
I dislike eating alone."
Jerry acknowledged the greeting
absentmlndedly, He was listening
for the faint whisper ot the am
phibian's engine. Had. It stopped
suddenly or had It dwindled into
silence In the distance?
The soft-footed steward placed
an Iced grapefruit before him. He
found tbat despite his disquiet of
mind, he had not lost his appetite.
"Nice place you bare here," he
observed politely.
"Isn't it? I congratulate myself
upon a happy thought when I pur
chased this house in sections and
had It assembled here after my
plans. The guests Inhabit tbe
west wing vhlch leads oft tbe liv
ing room. My rather large staff
uses the east wing and some liv
ing quarters over the hangar-boat
house. An admirable arrange
ment" Jerry grinned whole-heartedly.
Tbere was something in the nerve
sad the Imagination of the fellow
tbat was very appealing.
"Mr. Peabody," aald tbe other
unexpectedly, "were you ever In
the Air Service."
""Yea," admitted Jerry steadily.
"Why?"
"Old you, perchance, know Cap
tain Jerry Calhoun?"
