The Butte Falls school case came
to the end of Ita legal tether laat
Tuesday, when the state supreme
court made an oral ruling denying
a motion of the Butte Falls scnool
district for a rehearing, in the suit
of the schoolteachers for salaries on
contracts for teaching. Attorney
George M. Roberta said today that
a further appeal was impossible, as
no federal question waa Involved.
In the circuit court five teachers
of the Butte Palls district were
awarded verdicts by Juries for aala
rles, the average being S1800 per
annum. The teachera claimed non
fulfillment of contracts, when others
were hired for their places. The
action followed a long controversy
over school matters In the district,
and a recommendation of the county
boundary board that the pay be cut,
commensurate with those In other
county school districts of the same
class.
The Butte Falls school district ap.
pealed the verdict to the atate su
preme court. That body recently
handed down a decision, affirming
tne lower court.
The school district was represented
by Attorneys E. E. Kelly and Porter
J. Net!.-
The action was hard fought
throughout, and watched with In.
terest throughout the state, because
of the Issues involved.

5 o'clock. Miss Mabel Swan son. daugh

a native of Jackson county and a
member of Vie well-known pioneer
southern Oregon family of the same
name.

HELD FOR PROBE
Clarence V. oray, also known here
as Victor H. Gray, whose alleged
operations for securing money under
false pretenses, have created much
attention in Medford, appeared in
Justice court yesterday afternoon
and was bound over to the grand
Jury on ball of $2000, on a charge
of obtaining money by false pre'
tenses.
Gray Is alleged to have attempted
passing a check on the Abbey Motor
company, amounting to 91100, and
on C. E. Gates Auto Co., bne amount
ing to 9800. Checks for smaller
amounts were reported by other busi
ness houses.
