FIRM
TO PROHI REPEAL
After a spirited contest between
Albany, Eugene, Portland and Baker
for next year's meeting of the Pres
byterian Synod of Oregon, this year's
meeting adjourned Friday after a
four days session at Albany college,
to meet there again in July, 103a,
' Before adjourning, the synod went
on record by unanimous vote against
repeal of the 18th amendment or of
the Oregon dry law, and declaring
that "most of the propaganda ap
pearing so generally of late In the
press and otherwise, against the 18th
amendment and prohibition Is not
sincere. Is untrue and has virtually
Ho foundation In fact.
"The synod approves the 18th
amendment as a vital part of the
law of our country, outlawing the
liquor traffle and contributing. In
proportion to Its faithful observance,
to the welfare, safety and well being
of our people, their sobriety and pros
perity, and the true happiness of
their homes, and causing, as shown
by government and other investiga
tion a greatly decreased consumption
.of Intoxicants and consequent de
creese In disease and death due to
drunkenness," .s -
Resubmission of the 18th amend
ment was opposed by the synod "be
fore there has first been presented
some definite alternative plan worthy
to command genera! acceptance as
telng sure to deal more effectively
with the evlla attending legalization
of the purchase and sale of intoxi
cants." "We Implore every Christian, every
American oltlSEen," said the synod, "to
stand true to Ood and right In thli
crisis, by his and he? Influence, vote
and earnest efforts to help stem the
tide of deception, lawlessness and
vll purposes which Is now threat
ening the welfare. If not the very ex
istence of our government and Amer
ican Institutions."
President Hoover's recent propos
als for drastic reduction of arma
ments were endorsed, end compulsory
military training In times of peace
was opposed.
Notwithstanding the hard times,
Albany college had, last year, one
of the best years in Its hlstoiy, in
point of student attendance and work
done. With the completion and ded
ication of the fine new Hansen gym
nasium, "Albany" Is splendidly equip
ped In this respect among the colleges
of the northwest.
Other pressing needs of the col
lege are a now women's building and
greater endowment to help provide
for the fast growing reeds of the
Institution, and Insure opportunity
for college training to the thousands
of young men and women eager for
: It but unable to get a gott college
education without help In some way.
Many' of these young people are de
pendent on earning as they go along,
to provide for the ccat of their years
In college. .
Albany college has made fine prog
ress In securing new buildings and
beautifying its campus in recent
years, but greatly needs more to do
Its best work. It needs a new wom
en's building, chapel, etc.,' to meet
its present opportunity. .
Albany college la taking fine rank
among others in the northwest, as for
example In the winning by an Al
bany student this year of an inter
collegiate contest in oratory, with 10
colleges competing.
Reports of Oregon Presbyterian
churches for the year ahowed a total
membership of 31.688, and a Sunday
school membership of about 37,000;
with church buildings and property
valued at over iS.000.000.
