KILL OR BE KILLED
"IT Is possible tbat I shall bava to
collect one more bill from jour
loving friends and relatives," Ash-
wood said. "Moreover, my abnormal
curiosity has been aroused.
"It haa come to my eara that
some of you bava become what
shall wa say? elemental. That Is
a psychological phenomenon that
Kill be absorbing to watch In Its
development
"Sometime It may give me pleas
ure to write up caae histories on all
ot you. It you should go-now, 1
should be denied tbat pleasure"
. "Maybe so," nodded Lucct, darkly,
"but le'aie tell you that a week after
wa been turned loose, It you play
as like tbat, I'll be here with my
mob and tear thla place to pieces,
yon with It At that I'll bare to
work fast to beat the coppers down

my Wast grand note!"
"Very Interesting." conceded Ash
wood, unruffled. "But how, pray,
are you going to And thla island?
When the time comes for me to
break op this delightful party and
Invite a new guest list down. I'll play
th proper boat and return you to
approximately the spot where I
picked you up. And In the same
manner, so far at transportation la
concerned. - After a day's trip In a
curtained airplane, who among yon
will be able to direct; a searching
party hare?"
There was a thoughtful silence
while Lucci and the others consid
ered. Ashwood's voice went on.
"No, let's not look too far Into the
future. Just continue to enjoy your
selves, ach In your own Inimitable
Banner. We'll not Interfere unless
yon become entirely too bolstorous."
"Bo that's your Idea of a good
tlmo. Is It?" Mallory broke abruptly
Into the conversation. '
Something In the timbre ot the
stockbroker's voice caused Hamil
ton to put down his cards and to re
gard the tense, u$ly New Vorker
with unfeigned Interest. The dis
cussion botween Aebwood and Lucci
had goaded the brooding man Into
'a state bordering upon freniy, His
heavy, atuletio figure waa leaning
forward la bis chair, his bands
clamped about the arm rests. His
ruddy face waa auddenly drained ot
all eolor. Ashwood was about to
answer him carelessly but, glancing
at him, be stopped and looked at him
With undisguised curiosity.
"Shut up, you!" Lucci faced Mal
lory, snarling. "I'm doing the talk
ing, sea?"
It appeared to Hamilton that the
gangster was deliberately adding
fuel to the all-consuming flame of
Jgillory's sudden anger. The stock
broker made a mighty effort to hold
himself In leash. The card player
could see the muscles under bis
mighty thighs tremble under the
atraln of his suppressed anger. The
eye ot the cripple were upon him,
too, seeming to probe Into the mad
dened man's very mind. '
: "Is this the gentleman who has
been cave-manning . Miss Went
worth?" asked Ashwood carelessly.
"Yen," sneered LuccL "I had to
alap him down thla afternoon. I got
mind to get rid ot him cow. I'm
getting so I can't stand him around,
guttling llkker all the time and
sneaking up on Nancy every time
my back la turned."
There was a hiss ot ' Indrawn
breath from the Intent watchera aa
Mallory, casting all restraint aside,
leaped. Like the athlete that he
waa, he dashed like a whirlwind
acroas the floor, hla arms bent to
punch or to parry. Lucci, a bead
ahorter, twenty pounds lighter,
smiled grimly as though ha wel
comed this sudden reversion to
brute physical action. Victor In
many a bar-room brawl, he had no
Illusions aa to fair or foul play. To
fight at all waa to fight to win. He

Mallory, by an almost superhu

caught the terrific blow on the hip.
He crashed Into One-shot and the

Hla face convulsed with hate, he

Nancy Wentworth. standing rigid
with horror, gazed wild-eyed at the
frenzied pair. The dull thumping
aa the dark head rose and tell

nor cry out. She beard Mallory
grunting, beast-like, aa bis arms and

In the frenzy of despair, Lucci
struggled convulsively. Mallory
slipped from his seat on the gang

over on his stomach, pushed him

over, sprawled full lengths on their

Now Lucci was uppermost Mal
lory rolled over and tried to puab
himself to bis hands and knees.
Perched on the other's back, Lu:cl
reached two clawing bands beneath
the other's face and searched with
clawing finger-nails for Mallory's
eyes.
They were down again, rolling
over and over. Tor a brief Instant
they had broken away and crouched
there, facing each other with expres
sions that Nancy had never dreamed
tbe human countenance could as
sume. Half a dozen deep gashes
marked the progress of Luccl's
fingernails from Mallory's forehead
to chin.
With a leap so swift It could
scarce be followed by the eyo, Lucci
hurled himself at Mallory, at the
same time bringing bis right flat up
frorr the floor In a tremendous
sweeping arc It atruck the other's
chin With a thud that echoed across
the room. The stockbroker plunged
to tbe floor as though he had been
bit by a aledgehammor. There was
a long, biasing sigh from the spec
tators, who thought the fight had
ended. But tbe prone man rolled
over. Tbe gangater reached for '.he
other's throat, but with a quick up
ward Jerk of his ,leg Mallory kneed
lucci in tbe groin. Luccl's sob was
like tbat of a wounded animal.
Nancy knew that this was a battle
to the death. Mallory, the suave,
polished gentleman ot Wall atreet
and the country clubs, was now an
abysmal animal, gouging and maim
ing, fighting to kill or be killed. It
waa Incredible. It happened to
other people, somewhere In for-olf

moment, pull the blankets over her

banish the nightmare from her

missed no detail ot the atruggle.
She was shocked to realize that she
was losing all feeling ot horror.
Her pulses were hammering with

tree again. He struggled to his
handa and knees, then to his feet,
where he swayed gently, steadying
himself by sheer force ot will. He

hardwood floor. He lunged forward
and seized Mallory In a clinch, his
left arm encircling his opponent's
neck.
Mallory screamed and threw him
self away. One-shot followed, Jab

avoid the spearing fingers, tottered
backwards and Lucci leaped for his
