channels.
For several days there has been
rather keen strength In the Califor
nia marketing owing to the great de- j
crease In the churning there and I
along the coast. Much northwest
stock has been moved in that direc
tion as a result of the higher prices
which naturally forced the upward
wing here.
Butter fat made the customary ad
vance of X cent wh'.ch Is now effec
tive. Oenerally firm tone ts suggested In
the market for eggs here, with
strength displayed at most leading
points along the Pacific slope. Re
ceipts continue to dwindle.
Cut st lc lb. In the buying price
of light weight hens to 7-0c lb. Is
shown for the day, confirming last
week's late forecasts of this desire
on the part of killers In spite of the
decreased supply.
Months ahead of the normal, new
crop young torn turkeys are being
offered to the local trade by Wil
lamette valley growers, but none ap
. peer anxious to start the movement
inasmuch as there Is still consider
able old stuff coining and the stor
age plants are loaded.

Moon's Shadow to Sweep New England
At 2,000 Mile Speed During Eclipse

NEW YORK (AP) The meaning
of future stratosphere travel speeds
of 9,000 miles an hour something
actually moving that fast can be
seen In northeast New England Au
gust 81.
This speeding object will be the
black, oncoming edge of the moon's
shadow during the total eclipse of
the sun which crosses upper Vermont
New Hampshire, Maine and a corner
of Massac htutctts about 8:30 p.
eastern standard time.

The shadow's speed is announced by
astronomers as 3,007 feet a second,
slightly more than half a mile. Its
shape will be that of a gigantic foot-

while they look at this shadow.
Those In New England will be travel
ing eastward with the earth's rota
tion at around 700 miles an hour.
If they face east, th shadow over
takes them from behind like an ex
press train at a diamond-shaped
crossing. It comes down from the
northwest and rushes ahead to
branch off to the southeast. Their
own travel with earth's rotation be
lng partly In the same direction cuts
down the shadow's speed.
This shadow is a black cone ex
tending behind the moon an average
of 331,000 miles. When there Is
ecllps the earth cuts through the
cone. The cut, astronomers calcu
late, may be made anywhere from
Just Brazing to 18.000 miles Inside
the tip.
The earth can also miss the tip
entirely, leaving It suspended aloft
llk the lower end of tornado cloud
funnel. Under such circumstances
the tip of the shadow may pass any
where from a few miles to 30,000
miles overhead. The result then Is
an "annular" eclipse. The sun shows
all around the edge of the moon.

A total of 27,327 automobiles were
checked at the 20 stations In south
ern Oregon Saturday between the
hours of 6 a. m., and 10 p. m., In (
the 16-hour count conductod by ,
the Oregon state highway depart- j
ment, according to figures received
today from J. o. Bromley, resident
maintenance engineer of the aWte
highway aystem, with headquarters
in Grants Pass.
Although the station one mile
south of Medford led In the 8-hour
count conducted last month, that
checking point, was lu behind th'
time, with the Paclflo highway loca
tion north of the junction with the
fairgrounds road south of Oronta
Pass showing a total of 4131 care
passing In the 16 hours. At the
fairgrounds check here 2030 cars
were recorded.
