POISON FOR 'BAT'
KDW YORK, July a(Wp) It Ja
unfortunate for Chris (Bat) Batto
llno that he neither can "take" the
members of the Fetrolle family nor
Mave tnem oiona.
. The former featherweight cham,
plon's ring career haa suffered more
than somewhat from the fact that he
first thought he could lick Billy, the
old Fargo express, and than, falling
In that, deeided to take It out on the
younger brother, Frankle.
Billy plastered Bat twice, almost
ruining the Hartford Italian in each
Instance, and now Frankle haa made
It an even four trltynphs for the
tough Fetrolle family over Its most
persistent rival.
Last night Frankle knocked Bat
about for the second time In two
weeks to gain a 10-round decision.
He wmldn't atop the Battler as Billy
did In their memorable meetings dur
ing the winter, but he did the next
beet thing by knocking him fist In
the fourth round for a nine count.

CARD READING.
By Tom ONell
Ability to deduce which cards are
held by opponents la necessary for
success with many contracts, dis
cards, leads and play furnish Infer
ences to the declarer even when
opponents havo not bid.
In point Is a hand on which Al
Morehead made game In no trump
at tha Bridge House, New York.
By able card reading he made a
Vienna coup that ta set up a. card
In the hand of an opponent delib
erately In order to squeeze blm
with discards In other suits.
Morehead found his partner with
nothing but a five-card suit, headed
by the queen-knave. This was after
Morehoad had made a Jump bid
In order to force a response from
partner. Here was the hand:

the bidding be kept open until a
game contract should be reached
North rebld his spades and then
south went to three no-trump.
The declarer saw he had hla prob
lems when tha dummy went down
with his lock of certain entrlea,
weakness of clubs In both hands
and dubious finesses even If he
oould get Into dummy. He decided
the best course waa to force leads
from the west hand. The defense
helped blm.
South opened the bidding with
ona diamond, west passed and north,
with his week cards, decided the
beat way to keep the bidding Jpen
would be to offer one spade Irfitead
of raising the diamonds. East passed
and south bid three hearts, one
more than necessary. Thla waa a

Here are Mr. Morehead'a cumnients
on the hand:
1 Weat ahould -have unblocked
with the club knave. He ahould
deduce that hla partner held four
clubs and allow him to lead clubs
again. West doesn't wsnt to lesd.
3 Throwing the lead back to
the opponenta. South does not like
to lesd himself.
8 The fsll of the diamond ten
makea the declarer realize that west
held a diamond doubleton. If west
holds the king of dlsmonds, south
must lesd the nine In order to have
a diamond entry In dummy.
4 When the queen of apades takes
the trick the declarer deduces that
the knave ox hearts Is In the west
hand, aa well as the king of spsdea.
West would not lead a apsde away
from hla king If his heart holding
were not worth protecting. And so
the declarer, rather than attempt
ing losing finesse of the heart
ten, chooses the squeeze, leading the
ace of spades before the diamond.
This is the Vienna coup, eatsbtlshlng
a card In an opponent's hand In
order to squeeze him and make the
contract.
This was the situation after nine
trlcka had been played:

If south hsd lsd his dlsmond be
fore plsytng the spade ace he would
have loat a heart trick. The play
of the apade aoe first, setting up
the king In the west hand, squeezed
west. If he hsd discarded his king
of spadea on the diamond In order
to protect hearts, the knave of
anades In the north hand would
have been good. I
The lead of the diamond on the i
11th trick forced weat to unguard
his knave of hearts ao that it
dropped on south's queen and the
ten of hearts took the laat trick.
