Science Finds Evidence of
Platinum and Rarer Rela
tives in West and South
west by Easy Process
By Reward W. BIakes.ee,
(Associated Press Science Editor.)
HOUGHTON, Mich. (fl) Little
gold and silver beads made at the
Michigan College of Mining dc Tech
nology furnish a new elue to deposits
of rare metals In the west and south
west. The metals are platinum and- Its
still rarer relatives, ruthenium, rho
dium, palladium, osmium and Iridi
um. These are mostly newcomers
In commercial mining, tout all poten-
lal prosperity builders.
They occur In many ores mixed
with gold and silver, especially with
gold, but are so diffused that their
existence, even In paying quantities,
has been as difficult to detect as a
needle In a haystack.
Process Reveals Rare Metals.
,The Michigan Tech discovery Is that
every one of the platinum metals will
write Its own peculiar sign upon a
gold or silver bead made by a cer
tain easy process. These autographs
reveal both the presence of the rare
metal and an accurate Idea of how
.much there Is. The sign reading was
largely aeveiopea oy i. u. djcco
the metallurgy faculty.
The beads are droplets of gold or
silver slightly smaller than match
heads. They are made by heating
highly purified filings of the ore to
be tested.
If there Is any ruthenium in the
gold, even as little as one-tenth of
one per cent, the suriace 01 tne oeaa
will show somewhere a small, cor
nscant dark blue spot, a tiny crystal
of ruthenium dioxide.
These blue spots spread like moss
on a stump, according to the per
centage of ruthenium. Always they
show first at the bottom of the gold
droplet. As the amount of rare metal
Increases, the blue encrustation
spreads upward. With two per cent
of ruthenium In the ore, the blue
mantel entirely covers the gold.
Rhodium Changes Color of Bead.
Rhodium signalizes Its presence,
not by an encrustation, but by
changing the color of a gold bead to
an Iridescent reddish purple. That
shade Is the Index for about two per
cent of rhodium. The color of old
rose means about two-tenths of one
rr cent.
Palladium gives the gold a some
what pebbled surface, warps the
spherical smoothness and yields
colors ranging from brilliant gold .o
a silvery bronze. All the variations
indicate fairly definitely the paladt-
um percentage.
Osmium and Iridium show their
presence by causing dimples to form
In the surface of gold beads. The
dimples are accompanied by a lacy
fretwork as the rare metal content
Increases. At high percentages the
bead will not hold together, and
falls In fragments. Each metal has
Its own rate of dimple making.
Platinum signs off by decreasing
the lustre of the gold, until with five
per cent the bead is slightly all'
wry.
COTTON YIELD IN
BY BOLL WEEVIL
ATLANTA (AP) Boll weevila
anil the weather may do what leglsla
turea were unable to accompllah last
prlng control cotton production
In the south.
Prom practically every section east
of the Mississippi river where cotton
la grown have come reporta of heavy
weevil infestation. Heavy rains have
caused grass to grow rapidly and aid
ed the spread of weevils.
County farm agenta In aouth Ala
bama report boll weevils very active
and "ready to attack squares as soon
as they are large enough." In Dallas
county, which led the state In cotton
production prior to weevil Infestation,
the pests are 00 per cent more active
than a year ago.
Spartanburg county, South Caro
Una. reported a 300 per cent Increase
In weevil Infestation In a period of
10 days.
t Union county, South Carolina, sent
reports of as high as 500 weevils per
acre, which Is an extraordinarily
heavy Infestation.
J. C. Holton. commissioner of agri
culture in Mississippi, said weevil In
festation In that state la very heavy
and will greatly decrease production.
"If the heavy weevil Infestation
oontlnuee," Holton added, "farmers
must soon decide whether to sacrifice
the feed crops and fight the weevila.
or to cultivate the feed crops and In
tensify cotton effort to smaller and
favored areas."
The pink boll worm has made its
appearance In Florida, and fear that
It may spread Its activities Into south
Oeorgla cotton fields has put Oeorgta
agricultural authorities on the alert
for a fight against the new pest.
The boll weevil la active In Oeorgla,
but no unusual infestations have
been reported to date.
Farm expert attribute the heavy
weevil lnfeetatlon this year to the
mild months of the past winter which
prevented them from being frown out
In their hiding places.
No estimate of the extent of wee
vil damage has been made.
