TO DO STUNTS AT
Mr. Vocallte, newest and moat sen
sational robot developed by the West,
lnghouae Electrlo and Manufacturing
company, will appear In Medford for
the first time at People's Electrlo
store one week from today. Mr.
Vocallte will dally show those visit
tng the show how science has made
the story of the Colossus of Rhodes
come true.
By those w.ho know him well Mr.
Vocallte Is known as "Willie." Thla
Is not due to any famlllary shown -
by the mechanical man. but because
he like any other Individual, wae
named without being consulted.
"Willie" it a member of the fam
ous Westlnghcuse family of robot,
He waa conceived and designed bj
J. M. Barnett, member of the West,
tnghouse engineering depsrtment la .
Mansfield, Ohio. Barnett became ln
terested In robots while working in
the East Pittsburg worka of the com.
pany, and after being transferred to
Mansfield developed t few Ideas o
his own.
Vocallte dtffora from all previous
mechanical men In Viat he answers'
to requests given In the human voice. ,
For Instance, If you want him tq
turn on a fan you tell him to do so.
This la done In as few words as poa
slble because the mechanical brain
of the creature disdains grammatical
forma and demands only the essen .
tal parte of speech.
And too. "Willie" has s yolcet
Upon command he can sing an art,
from an opera or do the latest torch
song. Ho is extremely apt at making, ,
speeches. Some might think it not
quite fair that "Willie" has to use
a phonograph record to sing or talk,
but he can not see why hla arrange
ment should not be preferred to th
human method of articulation. Hs
argues that both methods are purely
mechanical and that his hat the ad-
vantages of being easily repaired or
replaced.
Willie" amokea cigarettes, any
kind and anywhere, blindfolded or
wlt,h hla scarlet eyes gleaming un
shielded. He has shown no 111 effects :
from his smoking habits. His voice
Is unaffected.
Moat of "Willie's" actions are peri
formed through hit Intricate elec
trical brain through methods Imper
ceptible and Incomprehensible to the
layman's brain. However he does
do some things that are clearly vis
ible and understandable. For In
stance. If ladles are present he can
arise. Of course his master, Barnett!
Is forced to remind him of his man
ners, but "Willie" Is yet very young.
Once having srlsen "Willie" will re
main at attention Indefinitely ex
until told to seat himself again.
Being an electrical sort of s per
son "Willie" is very adept at turning
on devices operated by the altemat- '
lng eurrtnt which waa developed la
America by the founder of the com
pany of which he Is a member. It
you had "Willie" In your home h
could operate an electrical apparatus
to ciose tne window in ths mornlne.
or. he could, upon command, tune la
any station you requested on ths
radio. During the time ha It here
Mr. Vocallte will, upon the command
of Mr, Barnett, do such things as
tuning s radio, turning on s fan,
vacuum cleaner and the lights. Thesej
particular Jobs were selected because
the audience can easily see that hs
is following the commands of his
master. He could with equal ease
perform numerous other tasks.
Despite Mr. Vocallte's fame hs has
not advocated the use of any par
ticular brand of cigarettes, cold cream
or mouth wash. He has had no
"ghoat" to write the story of his
life. He stands upon hit own metal
lega and wean no eollar at all, muca
less any other man's collar.
Seriously "Willie" Vocallte Is an
exemplification of what tclence 14
doing to make life easier for man
By personifying him through ths
sddltlon of a body he has been mads
Into s thing of popular appeal. Ths
student will realm that ,tat Is s cryt
talllutlon of the thoughts of man
through ths ages of s mechanical
being that would work tirelessly and
efficiently.
"Willie." as was explained answers '
to spoken commands. These com
mands are Issued Into an ordinary
telephone mouthpiece. This telephone, '
however, Is not connected electrically
with the mechanical brain of ths
robot. Instead Barnett has arranged
the robot so that s beam of Ugh
carries his voles across the stage ta
a photo-electrle cell or "electrls
eye" In the mechanical brain. The.
commands go Into the telephone snol
thence to a mechanism which trans
lates them Into a beam of light.
Across the beam of light they go)
to the extremely sensitive tube which
relays them on to the mist of elec
trical relays that make up "Willie's
brain. This brain accepts the com.
mands, adjusts Itself, then performs
the operation Indicated.
"Willie" wilt do his routine nt
stunts dally while here, clicking nd
butting contentedly In his Inner. :
most aelf. Showing before thout
snds, stsrtlng transcontinental! asy
lines, or engaging In s tete-a-tete)
with famous persons like Helen Kans
or Wallace Beery, are all In a aav
work for him. His Is ths great tin
face.
