STNOPSIS: A "neic racket in
kidnaping.- the oMln ot Nancy
Wentworth, musical comedy ac
treee, and two millionaire! by a
coolly operating puna, while they
dtmand "board money" tor their
captives, rouaea wl'leapread in
dignation. Apparently, the rela
tive mutt pay whatever is de
mantled, and perhaps keep on
paying, with no surety ot tho re
turn of the captives. The money
has been placed, as demanded, in
a rowboat ten mile southeast ot
the itontauk point liahthouse. All
boats must stay eight miles away.
Put Jerry Calhoun, who was with
iianov when she was captured,
and his friend, Emory Battles, fly
over the scent in an airplane.
They hope to remain unobserved.
Another plave appears and heads
tor the rowboat, "They're alter
the money," Jerry shouts, glid
ing down ton-aril the strange
plane, lie must net near enough
to watoh and himsel remain un
seen. Chapter 6
PURSUIT BY PLANE
JERRY measured as best be could
the speed of bis own craft
against that ot the other. It was
quite evident that tbe stranger was
not expecting aerial pursuit since
he was loafing along at baroly three
quarters the rated speed ot his ship.
With bis own engine wide open,
Jerry was able to keep pace. So be
at comfortably back In bis seat,
hoping that the other pilot would
not see him and leave him far behind.
When One-shot Luccl, the notorious gang leader, was kidnaped, his body
guards had shot first
The descant of the amnhlhtan
bad been noted by observers In the
crow'a nest of the guarding vessels.
Jerry and Emory saw destroyers
and picket boats get under way,
heading on a forlorn chase after the
two airplanes. Jerry could Imagine
their radio operators busily ham
mering at their keys, trying to sum
mon army planes from Mlneola and
navy flying boats from Far Rocka
way to bead oft the escaping crimi
nals. The low-lying shore ot Long
Island gradually slid astern. The
amphibian was edging out to sea,
taking no chancea ot being ob
served and reported by the vigilant
coast guard llfosavlng stations
which dotted the shore line. Sandy
Hook appeared Just abreast the air
plane's right wing, followed by the
Highlands, Sea Bright, Deal Beach
and the other Jersey resorts.
With evory mile covered Jerry's
spirits sank lower and lower. He
now glanced more often at the gaso
line gauge than at the steadily fly
ing amphibian. The old training
hip wag not equlppod for longdis
tance flying.
Two mlloa benoath him and slight
ly ahoad was tbe plane.
For a few dosporate moments he
considered the possibility ot diving
upon It, trying with his own expert
ness In maneuvering to force It to
lending. But be knew that It
would be folly. By the mere act of
horlng his throttle forward the
other pilot could out-speed him.
Just as the Irregular sky Una of
Atlantlo City began to loom up In
the hate to the southwest, Jorry.
with bitterness In his heart, banked
over on his right wing tip and
headed Inshore. The amphibian,
continuing her straightaway course,
rapidly dwindled to nothing In the
outbern sky. Jorry cut bis motor
and nosed down.
"Hardly enougb gas to make
bore!" he shouted.
Emory nodded silently.
On Tuesday morning, five days
after the kidnapers had made a
successful escape with tho 'hoard"
money, tbe newspapers announcod
new series of outrages.
PORTLAND, July 1 (AP) Alleged
discrimination against use of wood
products tn construction of the new
federal building at Portland was cited

Huge headlines nereis tbe front
pages proclaimed that the kidnap
ers had descended upon Chicago
the evening before and bad been
spectacularly successful. Ronald P.
Williams, multl-mllllonalre grain
broker, had been seized at the door
of bis luxurious borne In Evanston.
II.' P. Martin, wealthy reai-estate
operator, bad disappeared while go
ing from bis office in tbe Tower
building to attend a private dinner
at the Illinois athlotle club, only a
few blocks away. The notorious
gang leader. One-shot Luccl, was
getting out ot his armor-plated
limouslno at tbe door ot a Wilson
avenue night club when he had
fallen Into tbe net ot the kidnap
ers.
In only one case had there been
bloodshed. One-shot Luccl had been
accompanied, as usual, by two
armed and alert bodyguards. Ac
cording to the reports of eye-witnesses,
tbe bodyguards bad shot
Brut. Their Ore bad been returned
by a stream of flame from a machine
gun. By tbe time the spectators had
nerved themselves to approach, the
gangster's chauffeur was tbe only
living participant remaining at tbe
scene. The two bodyguards were
dead, their bodies riddled wltb
slugs. One-shot had disappeared.
It was quite apparent that tbe kid
nepers had made a thorough study.
ot their victims nanus.
Conflicting accounts of tho battlt

were being Investigated by tba Chi

expected.
"Arrest expected phoolel" ex
claimed Jorry, throwing the newspa

table.
There, there," cooed Emory.
soothingly. "You mustn't get your
self upset like that I can boar your
arteries hardening."
"Six people, plus the klduapera
tbemsolves, hidden away some
whoro," Jorry went on, rising to
search the pockets of his dressing
gown for anothor cigarette. "They'll
hare to lease a hotel If they keep on
adding to their 'guest list.' "
"Thoy must be having a nice time
together, wherevor they are,"
mused Emory, thoughtfully.
"Yob, mustn't they?" retorted Jer
ry vlolontly. "Four woalthy busi
ness men, a millionaire' gangster
and one beautiful girl, to say noth
ing of the kldnapors themsolves!
All hlddon away In some Isolated
spot."
Emory, who had novor fallen on
der tho spell of Nancy Wentworlh's
eyes, chuckled cold-bloododly.
"Here's my bright thought for tho
day, Jerry," he said. "It those peo
ple are bold prisoners together tor
a weok or two, thore won't be a
patch ot whole skin an Inch square
among the lot ot them."
Jorry, restless, walked to the win
dow and gated out at tho neat, or
derly patch ot grasa that was
Qramorcy park.
Hawes, the butler, valet, cook and
general factotum whom Emory kopt
on a yearly payroll to serve him on
his frequent visits to his Now York
apnrtniont, entered tho room.
"A gentleman, sir, by the name of
Stovor.s, wishes to see Mr. Cal
houn." "Let him In," nodded Jerry. "He's
the detective bird who visited me at
the hospital."
