'What the Girl

By Mrs. D. f. Wilson
"Making Friends Who Stick" Is th
title of a short edltorlsl by Arthur
Desn, In a recent number of the Du
luth Herald. - The friends we make
and keep sre often a measure ot our
own character.
Mr. Dean writes of the desire for
friends who. In th words of John
Mssefleld, "mske salt sweet and
blackness bright." He goes on to give
a few simple ways of making friends
who understand, who atlck by us.
who trust even when they do not
understand.
"Be yourself a friend. For every
thing you want In friendship, see to
It that you. yourself, return In over- j
flowing messure. If you wsnt loyslty,
hand It out. If you wsnt to bs
understood, then understsnd. If you j
want .to be 'bucked up,' do some i
bucking up yourself.
"Do not expect too much of all ;
your friends but expect a lot from !
one or two of your friends. Do not
give too much to all your friends, 1
but give a lot to one or two of your j
friends. Friendship consists in giving '
and taking. It Is not one-sided. It '
Is ussless to givs when and where It '
Is not understood snd appreciated, j
It Is useless to take what cannot be j
returned. While each o, ua needs a j
friend to whom we may expos our j
nsked soul. It Is unwise to strip our j
souls before everybody. Secrets sre
not tor all friendships."
A Test of Friendship j
"I. Do you keep yourself In clrcu
lstlon by getting out to gatherings ;
where you will meet people? i
"J. Do you out of your way to
do little favors without thinking
what you will get out of It?
"3. Do you ahow an Interest In
other people and make an effort to
play the game atralght? j
"4. Do you travel around with an !
Injured look and expect somebody to
rush up and tell you that you are
perfectly wonderful?
". Do you neglect your friends, :
then suddenly make a rush at them,
and find thst something Is lacking?
"As I hsve said msny times, to have
a friend, be one."
