Winners of their last six games,
the best spurt they have made since
the first month of the race, the
Washington Senators seem to be get
ting along very nicely without their
leading hitter, Carl Reynolds.
Dave Harris, who stepped Into
Reynolds'. right field berth after the
Utter' Jaw was broken by "One
Punch" Dickey of the Yankees on
Independence day, ha been playing
a lot of baseball and has had i
prominent part In the present win
nlng streak. He and Joe Kuhel, who
Is filling In for Joe Judge at first
base, are doing so well, In fact, that
It will bo difficult for Walt Johnson
to send them back to the bench
when the ailing regulars return.
Harris' Homer Helps,
Harris hit a home-run with one
aboard and Kuhel scored a run yes
terday to give the Senators a 5 to 4
verdict over St. Louis in 13 Innings.
It was only the second victory for
Washington In nine bouts with the
Browns this season, Indicating they
are doing at least as well as usual,
Cleveland's Indians, meantime,
went right on with their campaign
against the easts "big three," cluo
blng the Yankees Into submission, 11
to 3, In the opener at the stadium.
That made It five straight for the
tribe and 11 out of Its last 14
games.
Foxx Gets No. 35,
Jimmle Foxx banged No. 35 with
two on feftse to help the Athletics
defeat Detroit, 9 to 2. His blow was
the high spot of a seven-run upris

The Boston Red Sox were stopped
short of their goal, a three-game
winning streak, when the White Sox
nosed them out, 9 to 8, In 11 innings.

good reason for Pittsburgh's leader
ship of the National league .len he

The rookies gave up only four hits
and allowed but one runner to reach
third In registering his sixth straight
Win.
The Chicago Cubs remained two
games back by beating the Brook -
lyna, 4 to 1. behind Guy Bush.
The Cardinals' run of four straight
wins was ended when the Giants piled
Into Dizzy Dean In two Innings to
win, 6 to 3.
Chick Hafey returned to the Cin

PALO. ALTO, Cal., July 15. (;p)
Out here in the , beautiful Santa
Clara valley, where athletic speed and
brawn are among the prime products,
America balled the roll today of her
greatest battalion of track and field
warriors for the purpose of picking
the Olympic team.
Upon the outcome of these try
outs, Including preliminaries today
and finals tomorrow, will depend the
makeup of shock troops to carry the
nation's shield Into atlon In the
tenth Olympiad at Los Angeles two
weeks hence.
Most of the main arguments. In
cluding the Bill Carr-Ben Eastman
duel In the 400 meters and the fight
of at least a dozen sprint aces for
the six most coveted places In the
dash lineup, will not be settled until
Saturday,
The extraordinary class of the field
In almost every event has had critics
all tangled up in arguments for days,
centering around such "naturals" as
the Eastman-Carr affair, the sprint
rivalry among T'pplno, Wykoff, Met
calfe and Tolan, the challenge of
1,500-meter runners to Gene Venzke,
the shotput duel between Brlx and
Sexton, and. the high hurdles test
among Sallng, Beard and Keller, all
world record smashers.
Ralph Hill, the Oregon collegian,
who set an American outdoor mile
record of 4.12 2-8 in 1930, was an
outstanding candidate In the 5000

THING OF PAST
CHICAGO, July 15, (AP) Bill
Jurges, star Cub shortstop, stepped
Into court with a timely assist today
to save his gun toting girl assailant
from prosecution on a charge of as
sault with Intent to kill.
After answering two questions put
to him by the assistant state's at
torney concerning the shooting in
which Miss Violet Popovlch Valll
wounded him twice and herself once,
Jurges suddenly halted In 'the midst
of a sentence with:
"I have no desire to testify."
"Do you think you will have no
more trouble?" asked Judge John
Sbarboro.
No, I wish to drop this case,"
Jurges replied.
Then the case la dismissed for
want of prosecution," ruled the
Judge. "And let's hope that no more
ball players are shot."
Questioned as to her plans. Miss
Valll, a striking brunette dressed in
fashionable white crepe dress.
said:
'After what's happened, I feel I
owe It to my self-respect' to con
sider the entire matter a thing of
the past."
Miss Valll, a divorcee, entered Jur
ges' room at the Carlos hotel, adja
cent to Wrigley field, on the morn
ing of July 6. After making an
other vain bid for Jurges' love, she
took a .33 caliber revolver from her
hand bag and started to shoot. In
the struggle for the gun, Jurges was
shot In the right side and left hand.
Miss Valll was wounded In the left
hand, but none of the wounds was
