Mrs. W. L. Davidson, who will make
their home here after August 1.-

Mrs. Butler' Hostess .
At Bridge Event.
Mrs. Harry L. Butler was a charm
ing hostess of Thursday afternoon
entertaining at two tables of bridge
at her home, which was beautifully
decorated. In sweetpeas and other
summer blossoms for the occasion.
Prize for high score, following the
usual number of games, was awarded
Mrs. K. F. Murray and the traveling
prize went to Mrs. C. W. Ell Is. Those
present were Mesdames C. C Darby,
C. W. Ellis, H. O. Hansen. J. C.
Murray, K. F. Murray, Z. T. Wilson,
J. A. McDougall and the hostess,

plunge party at Helman's In Ash

Horseback Riders ,
Visit Antelope.
The Antelope divide was . the goal
of Medford a group of horseback
riders last evening and all members
of the party going out from the
Dodge academy reached their goal.
Supper was served on the divide and
the ride back to the city enjoyed by
moonlight.
On the trip were Mrs. W. B.
Johnston, Mrs. E. R. Wood and dau
ghter, Helen. Helen Hinck, Marjorie
Llndley, Helen Dugan, Delia Harris.
Joyce Gage, Bernlce Gill, Jean Rice,
Elizabeth Swigart, Grace Voss, Gor
don Benson and Mr. and Mrs. O. L.

Miss Baucom Honored
at Swimming Party
Miss Martha Baucom of Portland,
who has been the house guest of Mr.
and Mrs. B. M. Baucom for the past
few weeks, was honor guest at a
picnic and swimming party Tuesday
at Ashland. Swimming was enjoyed
at the Twin Plunges.
Guests for the afternoon were Miss
Baucom, Mrs. B. M. Baucom, Mrs. Al
Hagen,.Mrs. Neal New land, Mrs. Sam
Jennings, Mrs. Fred King, Mrs. Reg.
Parrett. Mrs. Gerald Barr and Mrs.
J. W. Grlgsby.
Large Party Enjoyed
At Ellis Home Wednesday.
There were six tables of bridge
in play Wednesday at the party
of the Guild Bridge club at the
home of Mrs. O. W E'lia, one of the
happy events of the week. Mrs. H.
O. Hansen took all honors for the
afternoon by winning the prize for
higb Bcore and the traveling prize.
Mrs. Ellis was assisted as hostess by
Mrs. Harry L. Butler.

Hartleys Entertain
Guests From North
Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Hartley have
as their guests for the week end their
son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. A. G. Valch, and children of
Portland; their niece," Miss Rosemary
Talmadge, of Oregon City, and Mrs.
J. S. Fishwood of Silverton. The
group made the trip to Medford by
motor and will visit several places of
scenic Interest before returning north.
Dlppels Enjoy
Stay at Beach
Mrs. 8. Ralph Dlppel and children.
Pat and Steve, have been vacationing
at Bandon since July 4. They made
the trip to the coast with Dr. Dlppel,
who returned to Medford following
a short holiday.
Flower Show Adds to
Garden Club Fund
The Medford Garden club fund was
enriched by a goodly sum last even
ing, when the flowers displayed In
the annual gladiolus show were sold
to admirers at the close of the exhi
bition In the city park.
, Crowds strayed through the park
from early morning to early evening
to view the glorious array of choice
glads from the leading gardens of the
city. An Increased number of varie
ties and unusual colors had many
busy taking down names of favorites
to be added to their own garden plots
next year.
The beauty added to the park by
the flowers during their brief stay
will be greatly missed today.
Woodcraft Plcntc
Event for Sunday.
One of the largest picnic parties
announced for Sunday, will be held
by Neighbors of Woodcraft of south
ern Oregon, at which the following
circles will be hosts: Acorn of
Ashland, Oak of Phoenix, Chrysan
themum, 'Medford; Azalla. Grants
Pass and Ewanna of Klamath Falls.
Students of the Institute of Mu
sical Education of Lea Angeles will
also be Included in the affair and
will entertain with several numbers.
Mrs. WUmot Plans
to Receive Company
Mrs. F. J. Wilmot Is anticipating
the arrival here early next week of
her mother, Mrs. A. O. DeVore, of
Iowa, and her brother, Chas. DeVore,
of Phoenix, Ariz., who will be guests
at her home on the Central Point
road. Mr. DeVore plans to locate in
southern Oregon and Mrs. DeVore
will spend the summer season here.
Harrises Leave
For Salem Visit
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Harris and chil
dren, who recently returned from
Bandon, continued to Salem. Where
they are guests of relatives this week.
SEATTLE, July 5. (AP) -Grain
farmers of the Pacific northwest,
facing inability to continue produc
tion, Roy W. Ritner, of Umatilla
county, Oregon, told the I. C. C.
grain rate hearing yesterday, are
"demanding a new deal on freight
rates."
"They are tired of having the
deficits from passenger departments
and from non-profitable freight ser
vice charged against their wheaf,"

WIN MAJOR SHARE
K. F. BOAT RACES
In the speedboat races and regatta
at Klamath Falls yesterday afternoon
at the Oregon Boat company dock.
Upper Klamath lake, Medford drivers
carried off most of the awards, with
"Irish Luck," piloted by Joe Meyer
and Harold Grey, winning honors.
The races were a part of the pro
gram In connection with the Lions
club state convention at Klamath
Palls.
With Joe Meyer as pilot, toe boat
came In for the lead In both heats of
the class O event,' and held trie same
position In class D. with Harold Grey
as pilot. Ernie MlUot of Stockton
won the free-for-all.
Only one nplll was listed In the
afternoon's events. Aa Grey was pi
loting "Irish Luck" around a turn
In the last lap of the first heat, the
craft turned over and threw him into
the water. The Irlsv ship righted
Itself and shot off across the laks,
landing In a bed of tulles. The boat
was not damaged, but It took some
time to remove It from the rushes,
Grey reported today.
Floyd House and Joe Meyer were
credited with exceptionally good driv
ing In yesterday's contest, which was
said to be more evenly matched than
the Emigrant dam races.
Winners in the class 0 race were
Joe Mayer with "Irish Luck," first;
Floyd House of Medford with "House
Afire," second, and Ernie MlUot with
"Baby Mahoney," third. Art Vro
man of Klamath Falls in the "Klam
ath Flyer," came In fourth, with Jack
Terrctt ot Medford, in "Rogue," fifth.
The second heat ended in the same
positions with the exception of Vro
man and Terrett, who reversed.
Harold Grey piloted "Irish Luck"
to victory In the class D contest, with
Floyd House second, and Heine Fluh
rer third In "Cecelia. MlUot came
In fourth. Positions were the same
In the second heat.
Mlllot won the free-for-all, being
followed In the first heat by House
and Fluhrer. Grey, who started last
In the race, was rounding the turn
on the last lap close behind Mlllot,
.when the boat capsized, eliminating
him. In the second heat Mlllot was
followed by Fluhrer, House and Vro
man In the order named.
The race program was sponsored by
the Klamath Boat club and Klamath
Lions club.

new business as compared with the
previous week was experienced by the
western pine Industry during the
week ending July 9. Production and
shipments llkewbe decreased. Of the
IIS mills reporting to the Western
Pine association, only 00 were oper
ating, and these at 33.S per cent of
capacity.

766.000 feet; production was down
8.081,000 feet, and shipments de
creased 7,621,000 feet.
Production was 37,623,000 feetf
shipments 35,626,000, and orders 24,

when an attempt was made the first
jday to transfer It from one box to
another the reptile writhed in anger
and began to wind Its colls about the
trainer, Carl Martin.
A seaman and a deck boy rushed
to battle and after a struggle, with
Martin grasping the' python's head,
the three were able to uncoil the
snake and cram It Into Its new cage.
