Chapter 5
THEY'RE AFTER THE MONEY"
JERRY'S eycj followed the line ot
Emory's pointing arm. There,
itrhaps eight miles from shore,
ere three chlld's-slze destroyers,
(teaming eastward In a fan-shaped
formation. Four or Sve minutes
later, off Southampton, another
lould be seen, Idling along a mile
r two off the beach. Between East
Hampton and Amagansett they flew
arer a half-dozen coast guard boats.
The plane was flying at Its cell
tag, sixteen thousand foet, when Ita
The man leaped from the lower wing of the plane Into the rowboat
crew saw the lighthouse at Mon
tauk point slide beneath their lower
wings. They gazed down In aston
ishment. Hidden on the Gardiner'!
bay side of the point were four more
picket boats and another destroyer.
Between the potnt and Block Is
land oould be seen several ot the
larger rum-chasing patrol craft,
which were drifting about, appar
ently In designated position, await
ing the call to action.
Jerry ' turned aharply ' over the
lighthouse and headod on a south
easterly course bearing straight out
to sea. At he had anticipated, be
goon saw an almost invisible white
peck on the water which repre
sented, presumably, the rowboat In
which a fortune In hundred dollar
bills awaited the kidnapers.
From tholr lofty seals Jerry and
Emory could see that the authori
ties, acting In cooperation with the
coast guard, had drawn a network
ot ships about the boat from which
It would be almost Impossible to
escape. Yet each ot the guard ships
waa so far away from the rowboat
aa to be Invisible at sea lovel. Jerry
understood the strategy that was
so evident from above. The kid
napers' speedboat would undoubt
edly be permitted to approach
the rowboat unhindered. Having
grabbed the aatchel containing the
money, the criminals would turn to
race for safety. But the chances ot
uccesstully eluding the cordon of
vigilant ahlps seemed, from the air,
to be alight Indeed.
- Jerry hoped that he was flying suf
ficiently high tu be unobsorved.
Emory studied the outlying ring
ot ships, rejoicing In the tense ex
citement of the moment. What a
binge this might turn out to bet He
was content with life again for the
Irst time In months. Surfeited with
the hothouse atmosphere ot Now
York night elub lite, he bad turned
the key on bis Qramercy park apart
ment. For a while, he had enjoyed
the quiet calm ot the mld-VIctorlan
bouse on Beacon street, Boston. But
aa ususl, six weeks of peace bad
whetted hla appetite for advonture.
He had picked up a two-day-old
newspaper with the vague Idea of
reading the advertisements of
round-the-world cruises when his
eye had fallen upon the flrst-pngo
story of the spectacular kldnaplngs

Mld-way to the bottom ot the first
column be had come upon Jerry's
name. Forty-five minutes later his
roadster was roaring toward the
scene of action. Had the dispatch
told ot Jerry's Injury In a Paris
brawl ha would bare sailed on the
uezt steamer. Jerry, the gay-hearted
war buddy ot the 199th Pursuit
Wing, the never-tailing friend, was
the one man In the world whom
Emory nerer tired of seeing.
The friendship between these two
men who had flown, fought and
played together lay too deep tor
speech. It was something that eacb
took as much for granted as the
rising and setting ot the sun.
Emory stiffened In his eeat, bent
far over the cockpit wall and
thumbed the focussing wheel of bis
binoculars. There, far to the south
west, was another airplane, wing
ing Ita way atralght toward the cen
ter ot the encircled area. It was
well below bis slowly-flying plane,
forging along at an altitude of about
Ove thousand feet. Emory stared at
It, trying to distinguish Us type and
Ljta markings.
vvitn ten or twelve tnousana reel
ot space separating the two ships,
It waa to be hoped that the othei
pilot would not notice the plant
which was spying upon him.
At last Emory's practiced eyea dis
cerned the curious hook-nosed un-
derbody of an amphibian, a type ot
ship equally at home on or over
land and sea.
Jerry, obeying an Instinct ac
quired during the war, worked the
biplane Into a position between the
sun and the lower amphibian, While
be waa able to keep that strateglo
place he would be almost Invisible
to the flyers below.
The strange pilot betrayed no un
certainty ot purpose. Straight aa a
bullet he flew toward the little row
boat anchored within the tar-flung
circle of waiting vessels. The am
phibian suddenly nosed and began
a steep dive toward the surface.
Jerry closed his throttle and put
the biplane In a thin glide. '
"They're aftor the money!" he
roared above the popping of the
motor and the whistle ot the wind
through wires and struts.
Emory noddod briefly, his blue
eyes glittering with excitement. Ha
tocutsod his glassoa again upon the
amphibian, which waa now levelling
out for a landing not thirty feet
from the tossing boat.
Small aa was the toy-like plana
beneath them, Emory could eee a
tiny black figure standing upon Its
lowor wing aa Its pilot steered tor
the rowboat The man leaped Into
the boat, remained there a moment,
then, as the amphibian turned slow
ly Into the wind, he returned to the.
wing. Presently be was seated again
in the rear cockpit.
The amphibian began to move
through the water, leaving behind
a spear-shaped wake which con
trasted whltely against the blue
background ot the tea. The wakt
ceased abruptly. The swltt-movlng
plane, now In Itt natural element,
banked In a wide, swinging aro to
ward the southwest and pursued a
ruler-straight course In the direc
tion whence it had appeared.
Jerry whirled his plane' around
and headed after the amphibian,
still keeping within the blinding
rays ot the sun.
