wakes up in a hospital next day,
where he it told that a bullet had
caused a minor but painful head

the Treasury department . asks
Jerry what he can remember
about the hold-up and telle him
that Nancy hat been kidnaped.
Chapter 2
A KIDNAPING EPIDEMIC
'1 DON'T mind saying, Calhoun,
' that at first we thought you were
one ot the gorillas," Slovene sold.
"But we found a letter or two In
your pocket and your car was up
the road a couple ot miles with Its
tank dry. It wasn't much trouble to
check up your war record. And out
where you were flying and to locate
the helper who wag working with
you last night So that left you
whlter'n enow.
"Now," he continued, hitching his
chair nearer the cot, "can't you re
member what kind ot a car those
babies were riding In?"
cantly. Jerry clenched hit flsti In
stinctively. "Besides," the placid
rolce added, "she's reported to be
engaged to Philip Mauomber, presi
dent ot the International Bank and
Trust Company. He could drop a
couple ot mlllllons any time and
not hare to lay up a yacht. So far
as that goes, the girl has made
plenty of Jack the past two years.
But It's Macomber they'll try to
chisel."
The pilot was silent, again aware
ot 'la throbbing head. The Idea ot
Nancy'a being engaged to a middle
aged millionaire was repugnant.
He had seen Macomber's picture
In the newspapers. Why, with all
the eligible young men there were
In the world, Nancy had chosen that
beetling-Jawed, cadaverous banker
was more than he could fathom.
And the thought that she was In the
bands ot kidnapers who may have
taken her away because of her
beauty was even worse!
The doctor winked meaningly at
the detective and twitched his bead
towird the door.
"Well," announced the 'detective,
I'll be easing along now. Got a lot
of work ahead of me. Wish they'd
put someone else on the case. Only
reason I'm here at all Is that the
chief's got a bunch some old friends
ot mine are mixed up In It."
"That's three prominent
people kidnaped within ten
hours," the detective said.
"A sedan. That's all I know. Too
lark," Jerry said.
"See any ot the men close enough
to get a description T"
"No. Wish I had."
"So do I," agreed the detective,
his voice betraying his disappoint
ment. He reached Into his pocket,
carefully selectod one ot a dozen
cigars, broke It In two and, stowing
It In hla mouth, began to chew It
with obvious contentment
"Seen any morning paperst" he
eked mildly.
"No I Just came to a few minutes
before you came In." t
"Just thought you rolgAt get a
kick out ot knowing what It was you
muscled your way Into. Listen." He
shifted his cud. "I just told you that
someone kidnaped Miss Wentworth
Well, that wasn't all that happened.
Just after dinner time a sedan
crowded Theodore P. Hamilton's
ear to the curb on Eaat Fifty-sixth
treat slugged his chauffeur and got
away with the old boy Just as they
Aid with 'he actress."
"You don't mean the rich Hamil
ton, president of the United States
Textile corporation?" demanded
ferry. Incredulous.
"The same," nodded the other,
looking anxiously at the floor, under
the cot and Into the spotless cor
ners of the room. Then, with a
hardly suppressed grimace, he con
tinued. "And that Isn't all, either.
Frederick Mallory yon know, the
millionaire stockbroker and sports
man was playing golf yesterday
afternoon out near Pelham, In
Westchester county. On the seven
teenth hole he was, near the edge
of the road. Couple ot men In a big
ledan stopped, watched him pull
and then, seeing that nobody but
the caddy was In sight grabbed blm
and rushed him Into tbelr car.
"So that's three prominent people
kidnaped within ten hours yester
day. There'll be an awful uproar
bout It
Jerry absorbed the news slowly.
His head telt heavy and dull.
"But why should they kidnap
Nancy Wentworth?" he demanded.
"The two millionaires will probably
be stuck tor good big ransom. Bui
lb Isn't a millionaire."
"No, but aho's a darned attrncttvo
girl," Stevens pointed out algnlfl-
Ho waved hla hand and was gone.
Jerry suddenly felt very tired.
Two daya later Jerry Calhoun
emerged from the hospital, pale and
shaky. There was a grim, set ex
pression on his face which trans
formed the little laughing wrinkles
around hla eyes Into hard, atern
lines which framed, and accentu
ated, the steely glint of the pupils
themselves.
For forty-eight hours be had tor
mented himself with harassing reo
ollectlons of the Ignominious and fu
tile part he had taken through those
brief momenta on the toadslde. His
sober judgment assured blm that
against Ave armed men he, single
handed, could have done little to
alter the sequence of ovents. Tot
the entire episode was, to a soldier
and a man ot action, unbelievably
humiliating. He could not rid him
self ot the feeling that he had ac
quitted himself very badly. Even
now he could not define a plan
which would have prevented the
kidnapers trom getting away with
the girl.
More than anything else, Jerry
was conscious of an almost over
powering desire for revenge.
In affairs like this he was a firm
believer of the ancient law of an
eye tor an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
He knew that without another meet
ing with those men, the affair would
rankle for a longor time than be
cared to anticipate. Moreover, the
girl was a captive. He could not
overlook the horrible possibilities
that existed In such a situation.
But what could he do? He real
ized that the police wore stirred Into
foverlsh activity and that because
ot the prominence of the victims
the newspapera would harry the offi
cials unmercifully. For some vague
reason the government too, had be
come Interested In the case, as the
visit ot Stevens had borne witness.
It seemed uttorly presumptuous that
Jerry, alone, could accomplish a
thing. It would take unlimited time
and money even to join In the hunt
Of time he had sufficient; ot money,
next to none.
