Catches Steelhead Wm. P. Isaacs,
well known local angler, found yes
rterday a lucky day. He brought a
steelhead weighing 614 pounds from

son of Portland, who has been visit
ing relatives In the valley for the
past two weeks, left for the north
this noon on the Shasta. She was

Medford today from Portland, attend

guest yesterday at the meeting of the
local Klwanls club. L. M. Miller, who
also represents the Hartford company,
spent Monday in the city.
Grass Fires The city fire depart
ment was called twice yesterday to
extinguish grass fires. One was at
the corner of Genesee and Sherman
streets, and the other was on West
Jackson street, near the Jackson
school. At 10:45 o'clock last evening
the department answered a call to the
corner of West Second and Oak
streets to extinguish a car fire.
Mrs. Cotchett Arrives Mrs. James
Cotchett and son, James Jr., of Aus
tralia arrived In Medford Sunday
from San Francisco and with Mrs.
James Pelton of Fort Klamath, who
met them upon their arrival In the
bay city, are leaving today for the
Pelton ranch after being guests since
Sunday of the John Orths. Mrs.
Cotchett and son will spend the sum
mer with Mrs. Pelton at her ranch.
The two women are sisters.
Miss Fa mm Goes Home Miss
Prances Farran of Rowen, Iowa, has
left for her home after a pleasant
visit here with her aunt, Mrs. R. A.
Murray and other relatives. She ar
rived In Medford from the south
with her brother, Duncan Farran and
family of Los Angeles, who also spent
their vacation In the Rogue Rlwr
valley. The trip was Miss Farran's
first to this section and she was very
favorably Impressed with the valley
and surrounding hills, and announc
ed a preference for Oregon over Cali
fornia. While here she enjoyed a
fishing trip up Butte creek and other
short Journeys to scenic points.

Mrs. Charles Fisher was elected
treasurer to fill the vacancy, and
the association took some active
steps to stimulate local Interest In
the domestic rabbit Industry and to
Improve marketing facilities.
CRITICAL CONDITION
Dr. D. W. Stone, local veterinarian,
was reported In a serious condition,
following an attack of asthma at
his home today. He has been suf
fering from the disease for some
time and during the past few days
Its hold upon him Increased until
this morning his condition was de
scribed by the attending physician
as critical. N'o change was reported
this afternoon.

TOURIST CONTACT
W. M. Clemenson, chairman of
the tourist contact committee of
the Medford Chamber of Commerce,
announced today that arrangements
have been completed for the two
meetings of service station, restau
rant, hotel, auto camp, and garage
owners and employees, together with
other lines of business who come In
direct contact with the tourist,
which will be held at the Hctel Med
ford tomorrow at 3 and 8 p.m. The
meetings are called for the pur
pose of giving those contacting the
motoring public more complete in
formation concerning the recrea
tional attractions of southern Ore
gon. Speakers will appear on the pro
gram representing the various re
sorts In southern Oregon, who will
be prepared to give complete in
formation on the attractions at the

according to Mr. Clemenson, to en
able those dealing directly with the
tourist, to supply complete and ac
curate information to all questions
asked as to where to go and what
to do in southern Oregon. "We be
lieve." he said, "that through the
distribution of accurate Information
to the motoring public, it will be
possible to Induce many to remain
longer In the aouthern Oregon coun
try, thereby increasing the benefits
to be derived from tourist travel,
even though the travel volume re
mains the same.
The new recreational folders re
cently published by the chamber of
commerce will be distributed to the
representatives ' who attend the
meetings, In order that they may
be placed In the hands of the mo
toring public, where they will do
the greatest amount of good. The
new booklet are attractively printed,
and contain many suggestions for
vacation trips through southern Ore
gon. RIVIERA, July 13. (Spl.) Max

modern auto camp. They have three
cabins completed and Intend to
build more. This Is said to be an
Ideal spot for an auto camp, as it
Is on the bank of Rogue river.

T PASS TEST
SALEM, July 12. (AP) President
Hoover, in a telegram to Governor
Julius L. Meier yesterday, said a
civil suit in federal courts to test
the possible trust feature of a lum
ber organization Is a necessary fore
runner to any final organization of
a large-scale lumber production com
bine. The wire was a reply to the
governor's appeal to Washington for
drastic action to cerrect existing
conditions in the lumber Industry.
A combination to Increase lumber
prices and to regulate production,
is contemplated.
Prominent lumbermen of Portland
plan a conference tomorrow to ascer
tain If the Industry Is willing to
test Its proposed consolidation cor
poration in federal courts. The
Hoover telegram was phoned to
Portland by the governor following
; Its receipt here late yesterday.
It Is solely a question of the ln
i terpretatlon which the courts may
i have placed and may place on such
I action. The attorney general has
1 no power to give interpretation to
. the anti-trust laws or approve action
which violates these laws.
SLAYER PLEADS
SALEM, July 12. tVP) Frank Man
ning, 30, charged with murder of
James Iverson, SUverton night watch
man, on May 3, 1B31, changed his
plea from not guilty of first degree
murder, to guilty of second degree
murder here today. Judge Fred Wil
son of The Dalles heard the plea.
. Depree Poe ami Robert Ripley, also
arrested In connection with the
shooting of Iverson, and charged
with first degree murder, have both
previously pleaded not guilty. Their
trials will start on July 30, to be
tried separately. Manning will be sen
tenced following these trials.

the sympathetic return letter came
from the governor, announcing that
their letter hf.d been forwarded to
the doctor of the Warm Springs

reported the number of young pigs
on farms on June 1 was 00.093,000,
a decrease of 3,758.000 compared with
the same date last year.
The decrease estimate was atrlb
