TURF OF FRANCE
Famous Little Rider Gives
Up Battle to Hold Pound
age to Requirements of
American Racing Rules
By OHI O ROBERTSON,
Associated Fress Sports Writer
NEW YORK. July 8. (AP) Earl
Sande, who rode to fame on eome
of America'! greatest thoroughbreds.
Is packing bl kit for an Invasion
of the French turf.
Finding It difficult to make the
weight necessary to keep busy on
American tracks, the popular little
rider Intends to sell for Prance with
in a fortnight.
"Just as soon as I can arrange my
affairs here I'll be on my way,"
Bande said.
May Stay Long.
How long he will remain abroad
depends on bis abUlty to obtain
mounts and win with them. If suc
cessful, Band probably will spend
the remainder of his riding days
showing the French how he became
America's premier Jockey.
Bande returned to the turf this
spring after a year In the movies
and radio but he baa found It diffi
cult to keep his weight down. He
has frequently made 115 pounds, but
this has entailed much hard exercise
and dieting. He figures he can
easily make 118 pounda and that
mlohfc ahmild Bet him OlentV Ol
mounts In France, where there are
more weight for age and scale weight
vents.
"It keeps me working hard to
make 116," Bande told the Associated
Frees, " and I believe I'll be much
better off In France where I will
not have to worry constantly about
diets, road work and ateam boxes."
Weight Bugbear.
Weight has been a constant bug
bear for Bande since he gave up
tiding and turned to training his
own r ea three years ago. In 1030,
however, he entered Into a contract
with William Woodward to ride Gal
lant Fox, and with the Fox carrying
130 pounda In . most of his races,
Bande was In his element.
William Ryan, American sports
man racing a large stable In France,
mt Instrumental In persuading Sande
. to desert the American turf.
In Invading Europe, Sande will be
following In the footeteps of other
great American Jockeys, notably Tod
Sloan who rode with great success,
both In France and England.
girlst
games to males
, Much has been written about the
girl athletes who will be- In Mod
ford to play the valley all-stars Sun
day, July 17, but th fact that
they can win games over men teams
and hold their own In wins and
losses on a 70-game touring sched
ule, brlnga home the fact also that
the All-Stars may be defeated by
the feminine crew.
According to reports the Kansas
girls have beaten many teams, all
of which had aeml-pro players In
the lineup, Including teams a
strong as the Mission Rookies of
Ban Francisco.
The girls last year handed the
Mission team a beating when they I
played a short schedule In the vl
olnlty of Ban Francisco and they
also won many games over teams
through New Mexico, Colorado, Utah.
Wyoming, Nevada, California and
other atates Included In their last
year's barnstorming campaign.
SAN FRANCISCO, July 8. (AP)
Jack Dempsey would like to fight
Jack Sharkey for the heavyweight
championship of the world.
"If there one man I can beat It'e
Jack Sharkey," the former champion
declared here last night In a radio
interview. "I'd like to fight him for
the championship of the world."
Dempsey recalled knocking Shar
key out in the seventh round of a
fight In 137, and said he believed the
same tactics he used then to defeat
the Bon ton gob would be successful
again.
"I have looked at the Sharkey
Sch moling pictures and think Shar
key has slowed up considerably since
I fought hlm.M said Dempsey. ".fur
thermore, he's the type of fighter J
think I can beat. He comes In on
you, and Is particularly susceptible to
a body attack."
Dempsey said he would like to
have a 1-round bout with Sharkey
to give him time to wear the cham
pion out. He added, however, the
time Is not now ripe for such a fight,
with boxing at a low ebb throughout
the country.
The former champion, now ap
pearing at a theater here, said that
In view of the protests over the
Sharkey-Schmellng decision, Sharkey
should offer the German a return
bout Immediately.
