driver of a motorcycle, was arrested
on the Crater Lake highway Sunday
by state police on a charge of reck
less driving. He was fined 25 !n

Guenthers' Guests Leave Mr. and
Mrs. Herbert Wolz, who have been
guests for the past week of Mr. and
Mrs. Hugo Guenther, left yesterday
for their home In Illinois, traveling
the Canadian Pacific route. They will
spend some time at Lake Louise and
Banff before continuing east. While
here they visited the numerous scenic
offerings of southern Oregon and "fa-
ported a very pleasant time in this
valley.
Dick 8 I e e t e r Improved Dick
Sleeter, one of southern Oregon's
foremost swimmers and divers, who
sustained injuries In a dive at Twin
Plunges Monday, is reported in an
Improved condition today. Sleeter
was presenting a diving demonstra
tion for the Fourth of July crowd,
when the accident occurred. Just
how, he has been unable to explain.
He struck his head on the bottom
of the tank and the resulting injury
to his neck was very painful and per
manent Injury was feared. His con
dition, however, Is much Improved to
day, his father, Dr. R. W. Sleeter,
reported this morning.

Garage Fire starting from a grass
fire, the garage of Sam Bateman's
residence, 302 Maple street, caught
fire early last evening, necessitating
a call to the city flrt department.

reported 111 with a severe case of
tonsllltls at her home here today.
She returned the first of the week
from an outing at Diamond lake and
has since been forced to treat a very
bad throat.
King Cotton to Play Ben Benja
min and his King Cotton orchestra
have returned to Medford for steady
engagements, and will play each
Wednesday and Saturday evenings at
Chllders' hall, starting this coming
Saturday, according to announce
ment. Sail for Panama Mr. and Mrs. O.
E. Nilsen of Seattle left here the first
of the week after viating Mrs. Nil
sen's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. N.
Thomas of this city. The Nllsena ex
pected to sail today from San Fran
cisco, Cal.. for a two months' trip to
Panama and South America.
Dynges to Play Dynge Brothers'
orchestra, which has been playing for
the dances at Dreamland for the past
two years, announce that they will
hold dances at the Oriental Gardens
Wednesdays and Saturdays, starting
July 9. The orchestra Is well known
throughout southern Oregon and is
looking forward to moving Into the
enlarged quarters.

JOIN FORCE HERE
To aid a government hunter In
killing panthers, mountain lions and
other animals in the Oregon forests,
on which a bounty has been levied,
two young men of Wichita, Kans.,
LeRoy D. Rader and Romalne K.
Hathaway, formerly In the United
States army, arrived In Medford the
latter part of the week, after a long
hitch-hike Journey, to find their
hunter wasn't here.
They visited the police station reg
ularly, where they had reported their
predicament, and this afternoon were
quite relieved when City Traffic Of
ficer Tom Rooinson located G. R.
Crawford, the hunter from Eldorado.
Kans., who had not made as rapid
a Journey as the boys.
The young men had given Officer
Robinson a description of the car,
which one had repaired in Kansas,
and through this information he was
able to recog n I ae the car on th e
street this afternoon.
LAKE OF. WOODS
More than 2500 people spent the
Fourth of July holiday at Lake O
the Woods, according to report today
from Wm. Offutt, operator of the
popular resort. Most of the guests
spent both Sunday and Monday at
the lake and enjoyed dancing, boat
ing, swimming and fishing.
Perfect weather prevailed during
the weekend and all boats were In
use and a demand for twice as many
voiced, the recreation company re
ported, expressing appreciation of the
generous response of the public to
all efforts to afford guests splendid
entertainment.
Fishermen also found the holiday
week end a profitable one, none re
turning from the lake with empty
baskets.

DOHERTY SEEKING
MILLIONS IN SUIT
AGAINST K. C. STAR
KANSAS CITY. Mo., July 6. (AP)
Two suits asking damages aggre
gating 942,000,000 were filed today
against the Kansas City Star and Its
executives by Henry L. Doherty per
sonally and by the Cities Service Gas
company.
The suit of the Cities Service com
pany alleging conspiracy was filed
in the Jackson county, Missouri, cir
cuit court and seeks 20,000.000 act
ual and 10,000,000 punitive dam
ages. Doherty's libel suit, asking 6.000,-
000 and 6.000,000 punitive dam-1
ages, was filed at Topeka In the dls-
trlct court of Shawnee county, Kan- 1
sas.
The actions today bring to 54,000,
000 the total for which the Star has
been sued by Doherty and the Cities
Service company for alleged libel and
conspiracy. The first action for 12,
000,000 was filed a year ago in the
Jackson county circuit court.
In a atatement Doherty indicated
other actions will follow.
The suit In the name of the Cities
Service Gas company charges that
the Star printed attacks on It as the
result of a conspiracy between the
newspaper "and persons unknown to
the plaintiff to Injure and destroy
the plaintiff's buslnes."
For many months the Star has con
ducted an editorial campaign for low
er gas rates in Missouri and Kansas.
The first libel suit, filed by Doherty.
resulted from this campaign.
OF HUSBAND, WIFE
LOS ANGELES, July 6. (yp Irwin
S. Liner, 43-year-old unemployed ac
countant, was held today on a charge
of murdering Edwin H. Clarke, A3, re
tired New Jersey telephone company
official, and his wife, Mrs. Kcndaci
Clarke, 59. Police said Liner con
fessed he killed the couple when they
attacked him after Clarke had ac
cused him of undue attentions to
Mrs. Clarke.
Liner was reported to have con
fessed last night after more than 20
hours of questioning by detectives,
who had held him since the finding
of the bullet-pierced bodies of the

Liner had been a friend of the
Clarkes for years, and when Mrs.
Liner left Los Angeles recently to go
to a sick son in Manila, P. X., the
Clarkes had invited Liner to come
to live with them.
On the night of July 4, Liner was
said by police to have admitted,
Clarke accused him of being atten
tive to Mrs. Clarke.
"It seems we have a triangle here,"
Clarke was quoted as saying by Liner,
in the latter'a reported confession.
An argument followed which reached
a climax when the couple attacked
him, Liner told police, they said.

Marilyn Stevens, 4-year-old daugh
ter of M. N. Stevens, employe of the
Pacific Fruit & Produce Co., who was
struck by a car driven by Loutee
Laughead of Jacksonville at S o'clock
last evening and taken to the Com
munity hospital in an unconscious
state, was reported in a much Im
proved condition this afternoon. She
was removed from the hospital to her
home this morning.
The accident occurred on South
Central when Marilyn ran from be
hind a parked car In front of the
Laughead auto.
