f RICE CUTTING IN
EGG TRADE HURTS
VALUES, IS CLAIM
PORTLAND. Ort., June 34. (AP)
Increulng strengtft in the egg trade
here Is held bacic to some extent by
the continued underselling of the es
tablished price list by so-called In
dependent producers selling direct to
retail stores that make a specialty
ef price cutting and selling at cost
or less.
There was no further change In
the selling price of eggs for the day
while buying values have In general
kept pace, or even slightly better,
than the Increase In tales.
Receipts oi nutter irom points out
fide of Portland have been extremely
heavy during the last few days while
liberal production has been shown
In centralizing plants. Here and
there the market appears easy for
cubes.
Very quiet trading situation Is re
flected In the market for live chick
ens. Prices are still down In the cel
lar and especially so for lightweight
bens and broilers.
Some country killed turkeys are
still arriving, the latest the trade
here has ever known. Good quality
Is finding a fair call, but again at
the extreme all-time low mark.
All through the market for country
killed meats steady prices and trade
conditions are reflected. There was
no change In values on veal, hogs
and lambs generally for the day.
First young berries, a cross between
the loganberries and the blackberry,
have been received. The Initial ship
ment consisted of two and one-half
crates. They were sold at $1 a half
crate.
Almost general dullness Is reflected
in the market for berries. Strawber
ries are moving slowly and at various
prices; loganberries are dragging with
Increased supplies while raspberries
are lower and only a slight move
ment. Prices continue to seek a lower
level In the tomato market. This
applies to outdoor stock from the
south as well as the local hothouse
offerings.

(Continued trum rage one)
our highways are modern, and that
our accommodations for the tourist
are ample?
"Perhaps your artist w,ho drew your
map did not realise that the states
or Oregon, Washington and Idaho
have highways. If he did, he failed
to make any notation on his map.
The Pacific highway, which Is the
longest paved highway In the world,
stretching from Agua Calient In
southern California, to Vancouver, B.
C. Is paved throughout Its entire
length, and has along it route many
of the weet'st outstanding scenic at
tractions. That the Redwood high
way, reaching from San Francisco,
and connecting with the Oregon
Coast highway, offers some of the
finest ocean vistas to be found any
where in the world. And that the
Old Oregon trail Is one of the na
tion's most historic highways. None
of these Is found on your map. The
Columbia River highway and the
Mount Hood Loop highway, with Its
spearkllng waterfalls, snow capped
mountains and beautiful valleys, pro
vides one of the country's most en
joyable and scenic drives. That the
highways In Oregon and northern
California pass through vast areas
of virgin fir and pine timber found
nowhere else in the world, and that
the Redwood highway Is famous for
its marvelous vistas of nature's old
est living things the California red
woods.
"We ask you. In all fairness to a
great section of the United States
. . . which Is so attractive to the
tourist and vacation seeker, that If
your writer did know some of the
things outlined herein, why In the
name of all that la right, did he not
make some mention of them In his
otherwise fine article?
"Why were not Crater Lake, Mount
Shasta, Mount Hood, the Pacific high
way, the Old Oregon Trail, the Coast
highway and other scenic attractions
In the Pacific northwest, noted in
your article and on your map?
"We hope, Blr, that you will not
feel that we are being unduly critical
of the article mentioned, but we do
wish that in the not-too-distant fu
ture you would devote a similar arti
cle to the Paclfio northwest, the
greatest recreational area left In the
United States, and that in all justice
you would endeavor to make amends
for the omission In the article in
your July Issue. We are certain that
your many thousands of readers
would be deeply interested In such
a writeup, and that the response
you would receive would more than
repay you for the cost and effort of
compiling such a story.
"Very sincerely yours,

Tfte sheriff's office and the banks
today reported a sharp decline In the
number of applications for auto li
censes. Applications were being re
ceived In a fairly brisk manner until
agitation was started, for a morato
rium, though the governor had an
nounced that such action would be
demoralizing to the state's financial
program, as the money normally re
ceived from license fees was needed
for Indebtedness payments.
It is expected that the governor
will Issue a proclamation soon fully
covering his reasons for declining to
order a period of grace. The drop
here is attributed to the hope that
the chief executive may change his
mind.

"After an absence of approximate
ly 13 months from the field of news
paper advertising. Associated Oil
company has determined that the use
of newspaper copy la essential In
getting over an effective sales mes-1
sage to the public.'
This statement was made by Har
old R. Deal, advertising manager of
the Associated Oil company, m an
nouncing the opening today of an ex
tensive newspaper advertising cam-;
palgn which will blanket the coast ,
with announcement of an entirely!
new aero-type gasoline for automo-
biles.
Deal pointed out that the com
pany has been In an excellent posi
tion during the past year to form Its
conclusion that in any well-rounded
advertising campaign, newspapers are
an element vital to the effectiveness
and efficient results of the advertis
ing message. Associated has been one
of the largest users of radio time on
the Pacific coast, and has also been
a continuous advertiser In the out
door field.
. "At this time, however, with the
Introduction of the new Plying A
gasoline, the company sincerely feels
th Importance of presenting the sell
ing story In black and white. In or
der definitely to impress readers with
the new features and advantages of
the merchandise," he said.
"Newspaper have proven them
selves the medium Ideally fitted for
a sales message baaed on the fea
tures of news, quality and price.
"We have long felt that newspaper
advertising Is essential In a well
rounded campaign, and our experi
ence In the past year hae certainly
convinced us of its place In the pro
gram. The advertising budget for the
year, just approved, has set three
quarters of a mllllan dollars for ad
vertising purposes, and newspapers
have been selected as one of the ma
jor means of carrying our sales mes
sage on the new Plying A aero-type
gasoline to the public.
