Former Governor Says Re
jection of Shouse Would
Be Studied Humiliation
Wheeler Favors Walsh
DAYTON, O., June 10 (AP) For
mer Governor James M. Cox today
lulled the following tatcmcnt:
"The attempt to throw the national
democratic convention Into a bitter
controversy over the permanent
chairmanship should be checked be
fore It gets far on Its mlschevlous
way. There should be a militant
protest from all parts of the country
against the development of any symp
tom of such folly. .
"In the present Instance the na
tional committee, which In the very
orderliness of things must make pre
liminary arrangements, found two
names before It for temporary chair
manship, Messers Bhouae and Bark
ley. Happily a compromise was ef
fected, one being given the tempor
ary and the other the permanent as
signment. "The rejection of Mr. Shouse would
be nothing short of studied humilia
tion of a man who has given his time
and his talents In furtherance of the
. most successful reorganization of any
political party In half a century."
WASHINGTON, June 10 (API-

of James M. Coz. of Ohio, with firm
notice a contest would be mads to

be said to newspapermen, "about re
fusing to place someone In zssltlon
so he can continue his fight to pre
vent the nomination of the unquest
ionable choice of the democrats of
the country."
