PORTLAND. Ore.. June . (AP)
Market for butter waa practically on
a nominal steady basis for the week's
start of the open trade in cubes.
Make lat week showed a further de
crease, as did the supply from out
side points.
Decreasing supplies of eggs are
again showing here wlVi a barely
steady tone suggested. No change in
the price la reported by the local co
ops or by private firms but unat
tached growers continue to undersell
the market. They alone are holding
down prices.
Underlying weakness Is reflected In
the general cheese trade sentiment.
Setback of chicken buying prices
Is reported by some of the larger
killers but some of the Independents
continue former figures. The lower
price comes at a time when the big
surplus of Washington is practically
exhausted.
General betterment In sales of
strawberries was ahown In wholesale
shops for the week's opening. All of
la&t week's surplus was cleaned up at
the low range and there waa a de
mand for more. Prices are higher
again.

EASTERN TEAMS
INVADE WEST IN
STRENGTH TEST
(By Aisoctated PreM)
The ferthcomlng Invaelon of the '
wet by the powerful eastern teams
will furnish the Detroit Tigers and
Cleveland Indians a ch&noe to dem
onstrate Just how seriously they must
be considered in the current Ameri-,
can league pennant race.
These two clubs alone aeem equip
ped to offer adequate opposition to
the three eastern contenders, the New
York Yankees, Washington Senators
and Philadelphia Athletics.
As the race stands now the Tigers
and Indians are being hard-pressed
to prevent the east from occupying
the first three places in ttw stand
ings. The Yankees, of course, hold a
five-game lead with Washington sec
ond and Detroit, Philadelphia and
Cleveland trailing at half game In
tervals. The Yankees, in their last game be
fore leaving for the east, trounced the
Red Sox yesterday, 13-1 as Babe Ruth
contributed hla 16th homer of the
season.
The Athletics walloped Washington,
11-7, although outhit 17-13. The Sen
ators missed the scoring punch of Joe
Cronln and Heinle Manush, both on
the sidelines with injuries. Jimmy
Foxx clouted his 3 1st homer. Detroit
counted six six runs in the eighth to
trip Cleveland, 10-0.
In the national league, the Boston
Braves went Into a virtual tie with
the idle Chicago Cubs by winning
two games from the New York Giants,
6-8 and 7-8. Art Shires' tenth Inning
double scored Worth ington with the
winning run In the opener. Manager
Bill Terry of the Giants suffered a
leg Injury early in the second game
and had to retire.
The St. Louis Cardinals moved Into
fourth place with 3-2 victories tn
both ends of a double header with
the Cincinnati Reds. Paul Derringer
and Dizzy Dean went the route in
each game for the champions. The
Phillies vacated the cellar in favor
of the Giants by scoring five runs tn
the ninth to beat Brooklyn, 7-6. Van
Mungo allowed only five hits but
walked 11 and had to be relieved
with none out In the ninth. Jack
