    'ELDER DANiELLS
LONG IN MISSION
FIELD OF CHURCH
Elder A. O. Danielle, who spoke
S&tuida; morning on the subject of
"The Divine Care and Protection of
the Christian" at the Seventh-day
Adventlst conference, Is quite gen
erally regarded as one of the "apos
tles of the denomination." In 1884
he went as one of the early mission
aries to the gnat island field of the
South Pacific, where he labored for
fourteen years, his work extending
over Australia, New Zealand, Tas
mania, Fiji, New Hebrides, and other
Islands At first bis labors were con
fined to the evangelistic line. Later
he was called to the executive work,
and under his administration, a very
strong and efficient organization was
built up Before he left that field,
the church membership had grown
to some ten or twelve thousand, and
of Institutions they had founded a
large publishing house, a college, and
medfctil sanitarium. The work In
that Island field waa so well
established that it has ever con
tinued to grow till today It
forms one of the strong "Di
vision Conferences," in our world or
ganization. In 1801 Elder Danielle was called
back to America and elected to the
presidency of the General Confer
ence, which placed on his shoulders
the responsibility of th world field,
which position he held for twenty
one years. When he was called to
the presidency, our world constitu
ency was about 90.000. It Is now well
over a third of a million.
His coming back to America waa
very opportune, for the denomina
tion had outgrown Its early, organi
sation and greatly needed revamping.
)Hls natural qualities together with
his large experience fitted him for
this work Taking the whole world
Into his vision, his first concern was
to establish a strong home base, yet
to rapidly press on to the regions be
yong. The Seventh-day Ad vent la to
now have their workflrmly estab
lished in nearly every country on
earth, there being no nation, tribe,
tongue or people of any considerable
size where their workers are not now
located.
The leading features of the Ad
ventlst work are, an intense evange
lism, a thorough educational system,
with emphasis on the Bible, while not
neglecting either the sciences or vo
cational training, an up-to-date med
ical work, and an extensive publish
ing work. Their many Institutions
have helped to give character and
tablllty to their work. Their col
leges and other schools, sanitariums
and dispensaries and publishing
houses are quite numerous In North
America, and Europe and are rapidly
extending to Asia, .Africa, South
America, and the Islands of the seas,
b Elder Danielle Is now field score -!
tary of the General Conference with
his residence at Washington, D, C,
and though In his seventies, Is still
taking a very active part In the de
nominational work.
