John M. Mann, city commissioner for
36 years, was retired from office
today by a recall vote.
Mayor Oeorge L. Baker, against
whom the recall likewise was launch.

The vote agAinst Mann was 52,529
and for him 28,343. In the case of
the mayor, 88,688 persons voted for
the recall and 43,882 against It.
Mann responded to the roll call
,tn the city council meeting today.
Before the regular calendar proceed
ings were taken up, Mann arose and
addressed the council, expressing
friendship for each member. At the
conclusion of Mann's remarks, Mayor
Baker said:
"Let the records show that Com
missioner Mann has been excused
at his own request."
WASHINGTON, May 36. (AP)
The senate today restored the ex
emption to newspapers from the new
communications tax in the revenue
bill, Including the levies on leased
wires, telephones and telegraphs.

of Carta Blanca beer."
He waived examining trial today
and his bond waa aet at I1S00. He
waa charged with the violation of
section 603 of the tariff act of 1831.
PENDLETON, Ore., May 30, (AP)
J. J. Lehrer, Walla Walla wool
buyer, waa found unconscious near
Heppner today, the result of an auto
mobile accident last night.
Grand Jury Opens
Probe in Shooting
At Otto King Car
The grand Jury this afternoon
started an Investigation of the
Otto King shooting scrape on
the East Side last winter. Deputy
Sheriff Ike Dunford. Louis Jen
nings and Fred Mcpherson Jr.;
were slated to appear as witnesses.
The affair grew out of the at
tempted arrest of King, for al
leged bootlegging operations.
The authorities claim a shot was
fired Into the rear tire of King's
machine, when he rJg-ugged
down the street, and refused to
stop. Deputy Sheriff Dunford was
In the auto with a state police
man. King, the authorities say,
has been convicted twice for boot
leg activities.
Roxy Ann Orange will conduct Its
regular meeting tomorrow evening at
8 o'clock, at the Lone Pine school
house. All members and visiting
grangers are invited to attend.

The vanguard of western world
war veterans advancing on Washing
ton, D. 0, to demand a bonus pay

and legalization of wines and beer,
arrived here today to await "freight
car delegations" from Oakland and
San Francisco.
The veterans camped In the "Jung
les" along the Sacramento and Amer
ican rivers.
Pioneer Dies.
LA GRANDE, Ore., May 20. (p)
John Gavin, 84, pioneer resident or
Union county, died here at the home
of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Gump,
last night. He was born In Ireland,
June 22, 1847, and came to America
in 1807.

of trials of ex-officers of the Em
pire Holding corporation being held
In the Dallas circuit court, and
Janes W. Mott, state corporation
commissioner, as related by Harold
Elbert, farmer near Balem. waa the
sensational development this morn
ing In the Dallas circuit court room.
Elbert was still on the stand as court
adjourned for the noon recess and
had not been cross-examined.
Elbert and his father, I. Elbert,
farmer near Salem, both subscribers
to the Empire Holding corporation
stock, accompanied Stockman at his
own request to the office of the
state corporation commission In Nov
ember, 1931. The elder Elbert was
hard of hearing and could relate but
little of the conversation that took
place between Stockman and Mott,
but the younger Elbert stated that
Stockman asked Mott to stop pub
lication of articles relating to the
Empire Holding corporation until
Judge O. P. Coshow returned from
his vacation In Texas. Elbert stated
that Mott In effect replied to Stock
man that he would try to, but that
he did not know If he had any
right to do so.
SALEM WATER BOND
SALEM. May 20 (AP) Hearing of
the case Involving the validity of the
$2,500,000 bond issue voted by the
city of Salem for a municipal water
supply, will probably be set for Sat
urday with Judge L. O. Le welling
presiding.
The validity of the bonds are being
attacked by the Oregon-Washington
Water Service company, which oper
ates In this part of the state.
CONKLE ELECTED HEAD
Completing his first year In Wood
lake Union high school as vlce-prln-clpal,
B. H. Conkle, formerly of Med
ford, has been elected principal of
that school for the coming year, ac
cording to a news article appearing in
the Woodlake, Cal., Echo.
Mr. Conkle has accepted the posi
tion, the paper states.
When in Medford, Mr. Conkle was
principal of the Senior high school,
resigning in 1930.
