Drive the Rascals Out!
IF there is, and has been, a gang in Medford which haa been
guilty of '.'depredations", of larceny, petty or grand, and
which now "threatens the .lives and property" of peaceful and
law-abiding citizens, then the people of Medford and Jackson
county are certainly entitled to know it.
They are entitled to know who ARE, and who HAVE been,
its leaders; who ARE and HAVE been its members. They arc
also entitled to know procisely what crimes have been commit
ted, and by whom.
. When these crooks and boodle snatchers are named, the
Mail Tribune pledges itself to do everything in its power to
bring them to justice, and if they are now in public life, DRIVE
THEM OUT I
"PIUS paper believes it is as interested in honest government,
A as strongly opposed to dishonest government, as anyone
in Jackson county.
The columns of the Mail Tribune are open now, and always
have been, to any responsible party or parties who will supply
authentic information, leading to the identification and convic
tion of the leaders or members of this, or any other gang, guilty
of crimes, at any time, or in any way.
SO by all means let's have the facts, the NAMES AND THE
CHARGES And then let's get busy at once, clearing up this
mess, and disposing of these charges of gang rule, vice and
corruption ONCE AND FOR ALL !
Not on the political Btump. Not in the columns of this, or
any other newspaper. But in the regular way, the only just
way, not only to the accusers and the accused, but to the people
of Jackson county, NAMELY BEFORE A GRAND JURY

During the past few years for example, thanks to improved
methods and facilities, ORIGINATED BY LOCAL GROWERS,
a total saving of 46J4 oents per box, in getting pears to the
consumer, has been effected.
Soma idea of the monetary value of this reduction, to the
industry, may be gained, from the fact that on our present
estimated tonnage, the total would bo approximately $1,000,000
$940,000 on 2 million boxes, to be exact. .
These reductions may be listed roughly as follows:
Packing 12
Pre-cooling ................. .03
Storing - 03
Refrigeration and Handling............... .16
Freight .IV,
Icing 01
Total A6y,
'T'HINK of that I Nearly a million dollars taken from produc-
tion costs in two or throe years, and by far the greatest
proportion in the past year. And we repeat, not due to outside
conditions or outside aid, but due entirely to the enterprise and
effioienoy of looal fruit growers individually and through their
various organizations.
It is interesting to noto in this direotion that the tremendous
saving in packing charges announced a short time ago, was
mado by the Southorn Oregon Sales company (S. O. S.), which
is not only controlled entirely by local fruit growers, but was
financed and is being operated by them a 100 MEDFORD
ORGANIZATION I
CO thanks to the high ability we have here, a million dollars
has been saved. And there are other things to do which
the local growers through their organizations are determined to
accomplish.
Every effort is being made, for example, to secure another
freight rato reduction on pears, the same rate now enjoyed
on apples. It is believed this can be done by shipping the same
number of pear boxes in a car as apple boxes, and showing the
railroad companies, that charging $1.73 a hundred for pears and
$1.50 for apples is not justified. If the local growers are as
successful in this direction as they have been in others, this
will moan an added saving of 23 cents per cwt.
Further efforts toward improving the quality of fruit,
standardizing both quality and pack, through the elimination
of inferior grades in tho Eastern market will also be made.
This will go far toward raising and stabilizing the eastern price.
a e e e
IN other words, in view of what has been done, and what local
A growers plan to do, it is no exaggeration to state, that when
it oomes to the production and sale of pears, Medford and the
Rogue River valley, literally lead the world, very much, as in
egg and chicken production, the little town of rctaluma, Cali
fornia, leads the world.
This achievement, which means so much to the development
and prosperity of Southern Oregon now, and will mean even
more in the future, we repeat can be attributed DIRECTLY
to the high quality of citizenship the fine and able type of
men which this section of the state enjoys.

All Except Punishment.

How to Be Democratic.

The Lindbergh case is ended,
except for punishment, and
that will come. President Hoov
er Friday issued the following
statement:
"I have directed the law en
forcement agencies and the sev
eral secret services of the fed
eral government to make the
kidnaping and murder of the
Lindbergh baby a live and
never to be forgotten case,
never to be relaxed until these
criminals are implacably
brought to justice."
The government's secret ser
vice agencies are efficient.
They make counterfeiting dan
gerous for criminals. Let us
hope that in this case and here
after they will make kidnaping
children as dangerous as coun
terfeiting money.
Our civilization haa always been
efficient In punishing Crimea against
money. Forgers go to prison, coun
terfeiters of unusual ability from all
over the world, find themselves no
match for government detectivea.
But thla country has been slow In
suppressing offenses against human
belnga, murdera in public streets,
"putting on the epot" racketeering,
taking men "for a ride" and throw
ing them out murdered, and all the
other Crimea that hare been devel
oped In thla prohibition-bootleg age.
It la good newa that the national
government hereafter will take the
stealing of a child aa seriously as
It hsa alwaya taken the counterfeit

Great mlnda unconsciously work
along similar lines. In Washington

that aa the income tax law now
stands, you must give 80 per cent to
the government. And any corpora
tion paying any American more than
79,000 a year is not allowed to de
duct the excess amount in Income
tax account. If you Inherit your
Income and don't work for it, you
need not pay the tax.

DOCTORS HAVE TO
Dr. Thorndyke, Dr. Hailey and the
others msy be good, but they're out
classed by a good many medical de
. tectlves whose ex
ploits are not de
scribed In books.
Remember the
case .we reported
here, of the
young benedict
who auffered
with 'a kind of
pseudo hay fever,
an out of season
affection? The
doctor did what
I call keen de
tective work in that case, for sfter
a ahort Intensive study of the data
he found the young man waa aen
aitlzed to orris root and then In
vestigated the young wife's vsntty
equipment and discovered she used
a powder containing orrla root. She
changed her brand, and friend bus
band got Immediate relief.
Then there was the case of the
Washington man who had auffered
almost constantly from alleged hay
fever for two or three yeara. with all
the characteristic symptoms except
seasonal periodicity. The only re
lief he enjoyed waa when he apent
a vacation at Atlantic City, or In
New York city. As soon as he re
turned home his trouble recurred. His
doctor tried nesrly a hundred tests
on the patient and he seemed to be
immune to everything. Then one
day in casual conversation the doc
tor learned the patient kept a par
rot at home. On making a akin test
with parrot feather tbe doctor found
that thla waa the cause of the trou
ble. Folly went away on a long Jour
ney and aa aoon aa all tracea of her
feathera were cleaned - out of the
house the patient found complete
and permanent relief.
There are a lot of similar stories
In which cats, dogs, canarlea, geese,
horses, camera, or their hair or feath
era or "dander" have been found
responsible for the asthma, alleged
hay fever or hyperesthetlo rhinitis.
Pittsburgh physician reports a case

affected too. Much Itching and burn

Lady aald she alwaya alept on her

The lady had recently tried a pro

It only a few tlmea and then gave up
in good spirits, the decision of the
people.
Beating a man la not admirable.
Word comes of the serious Illness
of Mrs. O. H. P. Belmont, who has
suffered an attack of paralysis. Many
women, who don't know It, have rea
son to" hope for Mrs. Belmont's
prompt recovery and long life. In her
prime, possessing unlimited money
and opportunity for enjoying idle
ness, Mrs. Belmont began her "votes
for women" and never oeased con
tributing energy, enthusiasm and
money until the fight waa won.
Men continue their attack on dis
tance, the law of gravitation and the
Atlantlo ocean. Lou P. Relchera, of
Arlington, N. J., la on hla way, as
thla la written, across the ocean,
bound from Newark to Paris. He
started, hoping to make the 3500
mile trip In 17 hours.
Msny do not realize It now, but
this and other flights mean that the
regular, commonplace traveling time
between Now York and Paris will be
leas than 13 hours long before ta
day'a bablea are grown men.
If you got through Friday success
fully, you have, according to the su
perstitious, not much to worry about
for the rest of the year.
Friday, the thirteenth, waa a com
bination that wont occur again dur
ing 1933. On such a day, all the
queer thlnga that have no existence,
but have been much more real In
the minds of millions than nlne
tentha of all the realltlea, are aup
posed to come out and do their work.
Adolph 8. Octree' prlnta a list of

More Important than these thlnga

meeting one evening and besought
the board to rent the vacant lota in
the city, have them plowed and cul
tivated and employ an Instructor to
teach the boys of Medford how to
grow potatoes and other vegetables.
The proposition appeared feasible to
some members of the board, but I
pointed out the fact that the law did'
not permit pubUo schools to teach
horticulture and that we had no
funds for that purpose. I also sug.
geated that these boys might be In
duced to help their parents In grow
ing gardens at home.
Mrs. Schelffelln plainly ahowed aha
did not like my action In thla mat
ter, and I presume ahe atlll holds It
against me.
