Wm. P. Isaacs' Rhode Island red
hen has something to cackle about
these days. And her feathers aren't
all in a fluff for nothing. She has
a lot to cover up, for out of the eggs
upon which she faithfully sat dur
ing the past several weeks evolved
chickens, duck and turkeys.
When the chlckena appeared the
old red hen got ready to leave the
nevt. But no, there were other eggs
to be hatched. She spread her wings
again. Out came a delegation of tur
keys. She looked them over with
critical eye, and settled down again,
two eggs remained unbroken, and
warm.
Then a foreign peep sounded be
neath her feathers. Bhe ruffled them
up and stepped from the nest with
a cackle.
She didn't seem to fancy them at
first, the two little birds with very
wide bills, the caretaker at the Big
Rock lodge reported to Mr, Isaacs.
But later gathered her cosmopoltan
family under her wings and has since
been clucking In three languages to
keep the ducks out of the river while
the turkeys and chickens eat bugs
on the bank.
